Avatar: The Last Airbender is a show that has given its fans some pretty awe-striking displays of power. Aang turning into a giant fish and defeating the Fire Nation's Army in season one, Toph single-handedly saving the day several times with her bending, or the final battle between Aang and Fire Lord Ozai -- all were stunning displays of power.

The characters in the show were so powerful that people can often forget that they were just children. However, if fans were to look at things logically, there were several battles in the show that the children should not have been able to win, or escape from unscathed.

10 Aang vs Bumi

King Bumi from Avatar

In ‘The King of Omashu’, Aang had to face a set of tough challenges set up by King Bumi. The final challenge was to defeat the king in a bending match. Bumi was over a hundred years old and one of the best earthbenders in the world.

He could even bend earth by just moving his face. He might have barely scraped through that fight, but he still ended up winning that challenge. It seems unlikely that Aang, who had only had twelve years of experience in airbending, would have been able to fight him effectively. Yet, he did.

9 Katara vs Pakku

Katara at the North Pole

Pakku from the Northern Water Tribe was a waterbending master. Katara had been the only waterbender in the South Pole with no prior training in either waterbending or fighting.

However, when she battled him, she could easily match up to him and instinctively knew how to attack and defend herself. Even though she technically did not win the fight, the fact that she could match up to him so well simply defied logic.

8 Mai vs Fire Nation Prison Guards

In ‘The Boiling Rock Part 2’, the prison guards were about to kill Zuko and the gang by chopping the ropes of their cable car. Since Mai loved Zuko, she took it on herself to save him.

She single-handedly defeated all the guards, some of whom were also firebenders. She was a non-bender, yet she managed to defeat highly-trained guards of one of the highest security prisons of the Fire Nation. The question is -- how?

7 The Blue Spirit & Aang vs Admiral Zhao & His Soldiers

The Blue Spirit from Avatar zuko

In ‘The Blue Spirit’, Aang got captured by Admiral Zhao. He was chained up and locked in a highly secure facility that was teeming with guards. Zuko aka The Blue Spirit snuck inside the facility and freed Aang.

With the number of guards and gates that were in the building, it should have logically been impossible for Zuko to sneak in, much less save Aang and escape with him alive.

6 Azula vs Everyone

 Azula versus everyone

At the end of ‘The Chase’ episode, Aang, Sokka, and Katara were fighting with Azula. They were later joined by Iroh, Toph, and Zuko. Azula pretended to surrender, but then suddenly attacked Iroh, who fell to the ground in pain.

Aang, Toph, Katara, and Zuko all attacked her at once with their bending, yet she managed to escape unscathed. She might have been a very powerful firebender, but even she should not have been able to escape when matched up against so many powerful benders.

5 The Gang vs Combustion Man

combustion man from avatar

Combustion Man was an exceptionally powerful enemy of the Avatar gang, seeing that he could create explosions with his mind. When the gang was running from him as he attacked them in ‘The Runaway’, a stray rock from Toph’s earthbending hit him right in the middle of his third eye tattoo, leaving him incapable of combustion bending.

Another time, Sokka threw his boomerang at him that also somehow hit him at the exact spot again. This caused his attack to backfire again, and he ended up blasting himself. It seems like only pure luck was the reason behind the gang escaping these battles alive, and not their actual skills.

4 Suki vs Fire Nation Prison Guards

In ‘The Boiling Rock Part 2’, Zuko and Sokka were fighting about how to capture the warden. By the time they were done arguing, Suki had already somersaulted across the prison, passed through several hurdles, and reached the warden.

By the time Sokka, Zuko and Hakoda reached there, Suki had already captured him. It seemed very unrealistic that a non-bender like Suki could so easily capture the warden of such a high-security prison, with a countless number of bender and non-bender guards backing him.

3 Katara vs Hama

8 Katara bloodbending

In ‘The Puppetmaster’, Katara met an old Southern Water Tribe waterbender called Hama. Hama had perfected several waterbending techniques, including blood bending. She taught all that she knew to Katara in a single day. When Katara found out that she had been kidnapping and torturing innocent citizens, she rebelled against her and began to fight her.

The young waterbender won the battle by using blood bending on her. Even though Katara was an extremely powerful waterbender, how was it that she was able to learn, in a matter of minutes, a technique that took years for the old lady to perfect? How was she able to use that same technique to defeat the very person who had mastered it?

2 The Gang vs Dai Li

Long Feng with Dai Li agents

The Dai Li were a group of highly skilled and expertly trained earthbenders controlled by Long Feng. When the Avatar Gang tried to meet the king of Ba Sing Se, they were met with resistance from the Dai Li agents.

The gang decided to take matters into their own hands and force their way to meet the earth king. They faced an entire army of Dai Li agents and defeated them. It seems implausible that a group of three benders and non-bender children could so easily defeat an entire army of professional earthbenders.

1 Toph, Sokka, & Suki vs Fire Nation Army

10 Sokka and Suki in the final battle

In the final battle against the Fire Nation, Sokka, Suki, and Toph fought and won against an entire fleet of Fire Nation Airships. This fight was severely imbalanced with only two non-benders and a blind earthbender against hundreds of Fire Nation soldiers.

To add to that, these soldiers’ firebending powers had been boosted by the comet. Yet the children somehow managed to not just escape alive but also defeat the whole fleet.
