Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was shown at Disney's D23 convention, where the company teased new characters and creatures.

A brief clip from Frontiers of Pandora was shown, teasing a standalone fight against the RDA, the primary antagonists of the film Avatar. The game will take place on the Western Frontier, a new part of Pandora that fans haven't seen before.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was initially announced in June of 2021 during a Ubisoft Forward showcase. The initial reveal trailer focused on the world of Pandora, promising an open-world Avatar experience which would mirror the quality of the Avatar films. The high visual fidelity and performance has been attributed to the use of the Snowdrop Engine, which has been utilized for other Ubisoft projects including Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. The other major factor working towards Frontiers of Pandora's technical success is the game's current-generation exclusivity. Unlike some other AAA games, Frontiers of Pandora is coming exclusively to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series lines of consoles.

The initial reveal for Frontiers of Pandora gave it a 2022 release date, but much like its cinematic counterparts, the Avatar game was delayed. Now, it's slated to launch some time in 2023 or 2024. According to internal sources at Ubisoft, that delay is part of an effort to ensure that the Avatar series can continue to play a role in the studio's future. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemont says "What we feel is the Avatar brand can become a video game brand." Other sources suggest that the delay can also be attributed to the fact that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, while gorgeous, is apparently not very enjoyable as a video game in its current state.

While a new video game is big news, the Avatar franchise is also expanding cinematically. More than a decade after the original film, the second Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water is finally headed to theaters in 2022. The trailer for that film was attached to the recent Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where Avatar fans got their first look at the next step for the franchise. Those who saw Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 3D were treated to a 3D version of the trailer, showing off the trademark eye-popping visuals of the series. Audiences have connected with that trailer, and it's become one of the most-viewed movie trailers on YouTube, in large part thanks to the dramatic leap forward in visuals from the original Avatar.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is currently slated to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Windows and Google Stadia some time in 2023 or 2024.
