Cameron provided commented on the film, stating that Avatar is still as relevant now as it was when it was first released in 2009. "We've got climate change, we've got deforestation, our relationship with nature is more at risk than it's ever been, and Avatar is about those things, but it also is a timeless film." The director added, "Some people criticize the stories for being too simple. It wasn't that simple — it was universal. It was something that everybody everywhere could understand and emotionally related to."

Several sequels are currently in various stages of production. Actors Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington returned to film the second and third instalment in Cameron's franchise back-to-back. While filming has been impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Avatar 2 completed production in September 2020. News regarding Avatar 3 has been scarce, but it was last reported that progress is being made and that filming would wrap soon.
