James Cameron's Avatar is headed back to the big screen in China.

According to THR, Avatar will return to Chinese movie theaters on March 12, with both digital 3D and IMAX 3D screenings. Avatar was initially slated as one of a number of American films set for Chinese theatrical re-releases in 2020 when Chinese movie theaters were first attempting to re-open. Surging cases of coronavirus (COVID-19), however, put those plans on the back-burner.

This re-release has the potential to send Avatar back to the top of the all-time worldwide box office chart. Currently,  only $7 million separates Avatar from the current box office champ, Avengers: Endgame.

Avatar was a massive box office performer across the globe in its initial 2009 release, but it proved especially lucrative in China, grossing $202.62 million and becoming the highest-grossing movie in China up to that point. Previously, the highest-grossing movie in the country was the $68.67 million haul of 2012, rendering Avatar a showcase for just how massive the Chinese box office could be.

Directed by James Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, CCH Pounder, Wes Studi and Sigourney Weaver.
