Avatar: The Last Airbender has captivated audiences for 16 years with its incredibly fun and intense narrative. In response to the popularity, Nickelodeon Studios has created an entirely new subdivision entitled Avatar Studios. This entity will be dedicated to pumping out the quality Avatar content that the fandom has been begging for since Legend of Korra went off the air.

One of the best parts of the Avatarverse is the wildly unique animals that exist in their world. Some of these creatures were incredibly friendly companions while others were equally vicious predators. Plenty of animals in the world of the Avatar would be incredible to see in our world today. However, there are just as many that would be equally horrifying if they existed.

10 Wish They Were Real: Fire Ferrets Are Utterly Adorable

Pabu the Fire Ferret from Legend of Korra

Despite their name, the Fire Ferret cannot actually firebend and are actually native to the Earth Kingdom. These adorable creatures are easily domesticated as seen with Pabu, Bolin's pet Fire Ferret. These loveable trouble makers are incredibly friendly and exceptionally obedient.

There are many instances during Legend of Korra where Pabu is seen dancing or performing small feats of acrobatics. He even manages to gnaw through a rope to save the day once or twice. Caring for a Fire Ferret would be relatively simple, though be sure to keep it away from any snakes that might mistake it for dinner.

9 Glad They're Fictional: Dragons Have No Business In The Real World

Zuko dancing with either Ran or Shaw

Dragons might sound cool on the surface, but these massive fire breathing, winged lizards were capable of incredible destruction and chaos. In the Avatar world, most were hunted to extinction thanks to Zuko's ancestors making the act of killing a dragon a right of passage. Lucky Iroh lied about killing the last dragon to preserve the final two, Ran and Shaw.

If dragons did exist, there would be no human benders to intervene should they want to eat a herd of cattle or destroy a city. The drawbacks of real-life dragons far outweigh the positives.

8 Wish They Were Real: Everyone Should Get To Hold A Winged Lemur In Ther Lives

Momo the Winged Lemur from Avatar: The Last Airbender

Winged Lemurs were native to the Air Nomad temples and forests before the 100 Year War started. Unlike the Fire Ferret, the Winged Lemur's name does hint at it what it can do. These incredibly intelligent animals were capable of sustained flight, due to a pair of wings that were part of their arms.

Avatar Aang made friends with a Winged Lemur shortly after being reawakened by Katara and Sokka. At first, the lemur ran off scared when Sokka briefly attempted to eat him. Though by the end of the episode he was called Momo and had officially become a member of Team Avatar. Provided the Winged Lemur had plenty of open space to spread its wings, it would be an incredible addition to this world's skies.

7 Glad They're Fictional: Sand Sharks Sound Like Legitimate Nightmare Fuel

Korra and Asami being chased by a Sand Shark

Ocean sharks are scary enough, but a shark capable of swimming through the sand that's as big as a whale is a truly frightening prospect. Korra and Asami were chased through the Si Wong Desert by a Sand Shark and it's only thanks to a well-timed firebending blast that Korra was able to avoid being swallowed alive.

Most people don't spend time in deserts, but these enormous carnivorous fish are enough to keep any explorer from entering the sand. Normal water-based sharks don't typically go after humans, but these Sand Sharks go after anything and everything. After all, there isn't a lot of food roaming about the desert, so it's safe to assume the Sand Shark is always in a ravenous frenzy.

6 Wish They Were Real: It Is Impossible To Be Sad When Looking At A Rabaroo

Rabaroo from the Ba Sing Se Zoo in Avatar: The Last Airbender

The Rabaroo is a unique combination of a rabbit and kangaroo and it is just one of many unique hybrid animals from the zoo at Ba Sing Se. This hop-happy mammal was much happier being able to jump freely in the new habitat that Aang built rather than being stuck in a cage.

This animal probably wouldn't make sense as a pet, but would certainly be an incredible addition to any animal sanctuary or refuge park. Assuming the animal combination is correct, the jumping ability of this creature would be unparalleled. While it wouldn't necessarily be a pet-type of animal, it would be a welcome addition to the real world.

5 Glad They're Fictional: Humans Do Not Have An Avatar To Keep Spirits At Bay

Wang Shi Tong the keeper of the library in Avatar

Humans in the world of Avatar are often afraid of spirits or attack them because they do not understand them. Spirits have also been shown to take out their frustrations on humans for doing things like destroying the land. Hei Bai is a perfect example of this, when its panda form was corrupted into a monster and attacked the local village because part of the forest had been burned down.

Spirits would not need much to become corrupted and begin a rampage in the real world. The main difference is that there is no Avatar in the real world to help keep the spirits at bay. If spirits suddenly became real, humanity would fold and spirits would likely become the dominant life forms on the planet.

4 Wish They Were Real: Polar Bear Dog Are Essentially Big Teddy Bears

naga from legend of korra

Despite being half Polar Bear, these creatures are more attuned to their dog-like nature. They are incredibly loyal and would do anything for their master. Avatar Korra's animal familiar is a Polar Bear Dog that goes by the name of Naga and proves to be an incredibly faithful companion. Naga is not only loyal, but also useful on many occasions as she is big, strong, and fast.

While a domesticated animal the size of Naga would be shocking, Polar Bear Dogs are essentially big teddy bears. Despite the size difference, Naga and Pabu are the best of friends all throughout the events of Legend of Korra. However, due to their sheer strength and many sharp teeth, crossing a Polar Bear Dog is never wise.

3 Glad They're Fictional: The Real World Does Not Need Any More Toxic Creatures (Like The Shirshu)

Nyla the Shirshu poking her head through Zuko's ship

This massive monster appears to be some kind of mole that is incredibly strong and large enough to ride. The Shirshu is strong enough to rip through the steel deck of Zuko's ship using just its mouth. It has limited vision and relies on its blood-hound-like sense of smell to find its prey.

Not only is this monster big and fast, but it also secretes a toxin in its saliva that can paralyze its prey. June is an excellent bounty hunter because she makes use of her Shirshu's paralytic toxin to incapacitate her bounties. Having creatures like these in the real world would cause a myriad of problems, especially when people weaponized them.

2 Wish They Were Real: Sky Bison Are Fluffy Clouds Come To Life

4 sky bison herd

The flying gentle giant known as the Sky Bison is depicted as a tremendously loyal and intelligent creature that is capable of incredible feats of strength and airbending. The Sky Bison are also credited with being the animals that first taught human airbenders how to properly airbend, much like how Toph learned earthbending from the Badger Moles.

The first Sky Bison introduced is Avatar Aang's animal familiar, Appa. The two of them were inseparable, and there were many Sky Bison moments that tugged on the viewers' heartstrings. This animal would not be an easy one to care for as it can eat hundreds of pounds of food in just one day. However, seeing Sky Bison roaming the skies would be a wondrous sight to see.

1 Glad They're Fictional: Canyon Crawlers Are A Stunning Combination Of The Scariest Animal Features

Canyon Crawler with the Canyon Guide in its mouth

Of the many terrifying creatures in the Avatarverse, the Canyon Crawler is one of the most frightening. It resembles a massive amalgamation of a spider and a crocodile that can seemingly grow to over 15 feet tall. These creatures can smell food from a mile away and will tear through anything between them and food.

Fortunately, the Canyon Crawlers' love of food allowed them to be overcome. Aang and company were even able to ride them out of the canyon using feed bags. Though given their sheer size and disregard for anything around them, it's certainly a good thing that these nightmarish creatures are merely fiction.
