Award-winning director James Cameron reportedly wants to drop his rumored 9-hour-long director's cut of Avatar 3 on Disney+ along with the theatrical version.According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Cameron plans to drop the extended 9-hour cut of Avatar 3 as a limited series on Disney's streaming service once the threequel hits cinemas. Sneider's tweet was met with several comments from fans insisting they'd sit through the limited series to see the director's cut, further underlining Cameron's Avatar franchise's growing popularity and success.RELATED: Avatar 3 Might Introduce Wind Na'vi Along With Fire

Cameron Wants Finished VFX For His 9-Hour Avatar 3

Sneider reported last December that Cameron had a 9-hour cut of Avatar 3 lying in wait, which didn't include visual effects. However, once the Avatar franchise filmmaker added the effects to the upcoming sequel, he'd then trim the director's cut before putting it out. The news raised some eyebrows considering the length of Cameron's previous Avatar movies. The 2009 original clocked in at 2 hours and 41 minutes, while The Way of Water ran for 3 hours and 12 minutes.

Avatar 3 already promises vastly different experiences from the first two flicks. The sci-fi tentpole won't feature Sam Worthington's Jake Sully narrating the action as Cameron revealed that Jake's son Lo'ak, played by Britain Dalton in The Way of Water, will take over such duties. Additionally, Cameron hinted Avatar 3 will feature more than one new Na'vi tribe as fire and wind-themed groups look set to feature. The fire Na'vi leader will be led by Game of Thrones actor Oona Chaplin, as revealed by producer Jon Landau.

When Will The Next Avatar Films Release?

Worthington and Zoë Saldaña, who plays Jake Sully's partner Neytiri, have signed up for Avatar 3, which, for now, stands as the midway point of a five-movie series for the Avatar franchise. Cameron said last October that Avatar 4 and 5, scheduled for 2026 and 2028 releases respectively, would only be made if the third film made a decent profit. Avatar 4 has already been partially shot, with Cameron saying the script stunned studio executives.

Avatar 3 is set to open in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024, just over two years after The Way of Water's release. Meanwhile, The Way of Water is still showing in cinemas, with a digital release featuring three hours of bonus content hitting all significant retailers on Mar. 28.
