Following COVID-19 (coronavirus) delays, Director James Cameron confirmed that Avatar 2 has wrapped filming. He also confirmed that progress on Avatar 3 is moving along and that production on the movie is nearly complete.

“Covid hit us like it hit everybody... We lost about four and a half months of production,” he told Arnold Schwarzenegger ahead of the Austrian World Summit environmental conference. "As a result of that, we've rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That's been announced already. Now that doesn't mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we'll just start working on finishing Avatar 3."

While Cameron was initially confident that the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster would make its original December 2021 release date, the coronavirus stoppage ended up delaying all four sequels by a year.

Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. The film arrives in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, followed by Avatar 3 on Dec. 20, 2024 , Avatar 4 on Dec. 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on Dec. 22, 2028.
