Sam Worthington has provided some context about “Avatar 2,” the sequel to the 2009 James Cameron-directed “Avatar.” Worthington said the upcoming sequel will see a significant jump in time, and while the first film’s protagonist, Jake Sully, will be present, the film will be more about his offspring and family life.

We Got This Covered spoke with Worthington, who has since starred in “Terminator: Salvation” and “Wrath of the Titans,” who said the film will begin shooting in the summer, but production has largely been waiting on a finalized script from Cameron, who also wrote and directed the first film. Worthington, who has read Cameron’s scripts, said the sequel will be even bigger in scope than the first film.

“This is going to be Jake eight years later, and he’s got a family now. This film is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen. The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it’s a movie about family. Jake will still have that essence of a kid seeing the world for the first time, but he’s been living in the world for a while now, so what’s this world he’s seeing now for the first time? The film will explore that within this family dynamic.”

“Avatar 2” is only the second of five films planned by Cameron. While “Avatar 2” is planned to debut in theaters in December, 2018, Cameron wants another three films across 2020, 2022 and 2023, respectively. When speaking to The Daily Beast, Cameron said he is keeping the remaining planned films in mind always, even as he ramps up to start filming “Avatar 2," noting that the scripts are all done.

“That’s exactly how I’m approaching it. They’ve all been developed equally. I’ve just finished the script to ‘Avatar 5.’ I’m now starting the process of active prep. I’ll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I’m booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we’re going full-guns right now. I feel like I’ve been let out of jail, because I’ve been in the writing cave for the last two years. I’m actually enjoying life. I don’t enjoy writing. I wouldn’t wish writing on a dog.”

Beginning filming this summer, “Avatar 2” is a production of Lightstorm Entertainment written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver.
