New rumors surfaced that claim that Disney plans on debuting the trailer for its upcoming Avatar 2 before screenings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Ankler reports that Disney intends to attach the trailer for the Avatar sequel to the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster that is due out on May 6. Given the potential revenue tied to both Multiverse of Madness and Avatar 2, fans believe the pairing could be prosperous. The most recent film in Marvel's on-screen universe, Spider-Man: No Way Home, brought in nearly $2 billion and is now the sixth highest-grossing film of all time, making the MCU a reliable choice to market James Cameron's sci-fi sequel. Disney has yet to confirm the reports.

Avatar was an overwhelming commercial success, going on to receive widespread acclaim when it was originally released in 2009. The film was praised for its revolutionary special effects technology and compelling narrative. Avatar's box office records were temporarily broken by Avengers: Endgame, but the sci-fi was then re-released in theaters and won back its title as the highest-grossing film of all time.

Despite the huge, record-breaking success of the first film, many are now speculating that the Avatar sequels may have a difficult time at the box office. Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios, has said that he's not worried about the 13-year gap hurting Avatar 2's box office prospects. "I can tell you that there is no better marketing apparatus in the business than the one at Disney," Asbell said. "They will do an incredible job reigniting that passion for the original film."

Asbell continued on to say that he's confident that Avatar 2 will impress audiences. "This is not just a sequel, it’s a saga. And it’s a family saga," said Asbell. "[Avatar 2] will be compelling on its own, but it will also be extremely compelling to return to those characters and to see how they’ve evolved." The sequel will bring back many of the stars of the first film, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. New cast members for the sequel will include Kate Winslet and Jemaine Clement.

Avatar 2 is scheduled to take over theaters on Dec. 16.
