The Way of Water long passed Infinity War at the global box office during its historic run, with the sci-fi adventure becoming the third biggest moneymaker in film history. The sequel grossed over $2.3 billion worldwide compared to the Avengers' threequel's $2.05 billion take. After reaching the $2 billion mark this past January, The Way of Water passed another Cameron classic in February, eclipsing Titanic to reach the podium. The Way of Water still has a long way to go to match another Avengers film, trailing Endgame by over $4.6 million. The original Avatar remains at the top of the highest-grossing films of all time, earning over $2.92 billion worldwide.

How to Watch Avatar's Award-Winning Sequel

Starring Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet, The Way of Water proved a worthy sequel to the 2009 original, becoming one of 2022's most acclaimed movies. The Avatar follow-up has won 38 awards since its release, including an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Additionally, it scored multiple nods at the 80th Golden Globes and received a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

Fans won't have to wait long to grab The Way of Water digitally -- the film will be made available on March 28 to all major digital retailers including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Movies Anywhere and Vudu. The release will also be accompanied by three hours of bonus content, allowing Avatar enthusiasts to access multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as audio commentary from the cast and crew.

Amid the success of The Way of Water, Avatar 3 is already a topic of conversation. The film will introduce significant nuances from the previous two installments, including fire and wind-based Na'vi tribes, with Game of Thrones actor Oona Chaplin leading the aggressive fire Na'vi. Additionally, Jake Sully will not narrate the threequel, with Lo'ak -- Jake and Neytiri's son -- taking over storytelling duties. Avatar 3 could feature even more bonus content as Cameron's apparently nine-hour-long director's cut of the film is rumored to hit Disney+ at some point in the future.

The Way of Water is in theaters now, while Avatar 3 is scheduled for a Dec. 20, 2024 release.
