During a recent Q&A session on Twitter, director Ava DuVernay revealed that, despite her excitement over tackling the New Gods for Warner Bros. and DC, the film is still quite a ways off.The announcement came from DuVernay when a fan asked for an update on the project. She replied by explaining that she's currently writing her next film, Central Park Five, and that the superhero epic New Gods "is in early development and feeling good."

The film update comes after DuVernay revealed it was she that approached WB about helming a New Gods film, and not vice versa. DuVernay was announced as the director for the DC film back in March, making her the third female director within the DC Extended Universe, following Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins and Birds of Prey's Cathy Yan. At the time of the announcement, a writer was not announced for the film, making it unclear if DuVernay will be the one to pen the screenplay or if the studio will take the project out to writers in the coming months once DuVernay plots out the story.

Either way, production on New Gods is still a ways off. WB has a slew of DC films in various stages of production, including a Harley Quinn & Joker film, Man of Steel 2, an untitled Joker origin film and a Batgirl feature, among others. However, despite having announced so many projects, the studio appears to be cautious going forward following the dismal box office of Justice League and is instead putting its focus on the Harley Quinn-led Birds of Prey, The Flash and The Batman for the time being.
