Writer-director Joe Cornish gave a promising update on his and John Boyega's sequel to Attack the Block.

In an interview with Deadline, Cornish discussed the work he and Boyega were doing on the sequel, with Boyega acting as a producer in addition to reprising his starring role as juvenile gang leader Moses. "John and I have a really detailed outline and are doing the research to figure out the reality that we then merge with sci-fi fantasy," he explained. "We go out in the real world with brilliant researchers and find people whose lives intersect with those characters to get the detail and realism. It's a co-production and we're going to take our time to get it exactly right.”

Released in 2011, the original Attack the Block was the feature film debut of both Cornish and Boyega. Cornish discussed the differences in making the original film and its follow-up, explaining, "It took a very long time between Attack the Block and my second movie, so I'm trying to be a bit more focused on keeping other projects in development while I make stuff. The first Attack the Block was made in complete secrecy so we had time to make it as good as it needed to be. We're now in the middle of that process." Cornish's sophomore feature, the modern Arthurian adventure The Kid Who Would Be King, was released in 2019 and was met with further critical praise but underperformed at the box office.

Boyega and Cornish's Careers Since Attack the Block

Boyega himself discussed what it's like to return to playing Attack the Block's Moses after over a decade. "You do go back and watch the movie again and remember the character," he said. "I've been back to my old script. I have my old notes to read. And then, also, on top of that, all the material that Joe collected, over the time to create the first movie, in terms of his pitch and everything that was in the bible for Attack the Block, we bring that out of the dusty corners, we blow the dust off, and we get back to work. It’s now about aging the character slightly and seeing where he's at now."

Since the release of Attack the Block, Boyega has made a name for himself playing Finn in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. His next project will be the sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone, releasing this July on Netflix. Cornish, meanwhile, has ventured into television and helmed Lockwood & Co., a supernatural detective series based on the books by Jonathan Stroud. The first season is currently available to stream, also on Netflix.

Attack the Block is available to stream with ads on Tubi.
