This revelation means several years have passed between the end of Attack on Titan Season 3 and the beginning of Season 4. The news may come as a surprise to fans who have only followed the anime, as manga tend to run ahead of its animated counterparts.

Debuting in 2013, Attack on Titan has left fans waiting for years between seasons in order to keep the anime from catching up to the manga. The new season is under the development of MAPPA, taking over from Wit Studio, who animated the first three seasons.

Based on the manga series of the same name by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan: The Final Season premieres Dec. 7 and will be available to stream on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
