While everyone was focusing on Eren Jaeger and his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, Annie Leonhart was full of secrets that shocked fans.

10 She Was Trained & Brainwashed From A Young Age

Annie had a very difficult childhood as she was separated from her mother and deported to the Liberio Internment Zone within the walls. She was then adopted by Mr. Leonhart who trained her in harsh conditions. Although his intentions were good, he was way too tough on Annie.

Mr. Leonhart wanted Annie to toughen up, so she could join the Military Police Brigade, where she could have an easy life. That training was extremely helpful, but it traumatized her. So much so, she even attacked and crippled her father, who was proud of her for that. Later, as a child, she also joined the Marleyan military, where Annie was brainwashed by their propaganda.

9 She Joined The Military At Age 16

Annie was very skilled by that age and stood out of all trainees. Thanks to her training in her early childhood, Annie had some advantage.

In the anime fans could see, Annie was very good at hand to hand combat but actually often mocked the whole system saying that most talented fighters are hiding behind the walls and don’t face Titans. During their training, she even taught Eren a move when they were paired against each other.

8 Her Name Had Hidden Meaning

Japanese manga artist and writer Hajime Isayama wanted to give Annie a name that had a deeper meaning. Anne means “Grace” or “Favor” while Leonhart is a combination of Spanish and Dutch. The two means Lionheart, which was often used to describe the bravest warriors in the middle ages.

She was beloved by her adoptive father, even if he couldn’t perfectly communicate it towards the little girl. Annie didn’t really feel loved despite her name.

7 Her Voice Actor Is Talented

Annie Leonhart was voiced by the famous actress Yû Shimamura. Fans probably also heard her voice in Guilty Crown, Gintama, or Koruko’s Basketball. Another famous role she took on was Siune, An Si-eun in Sword Art Online. She was also contributing to a number of hit video games.

Her notable works include Legend of Zelda and a few Final Fantasy episodes. Most fans preferred to watch the series with the original dub because the Japanese voice actors were great.

6 Her Fighting technique Was Inspired by Muay Thai

Fans really loved Annie’s unique fighting technique as it was both effective and visually stunning. She could disarm nearly anyone she had to face during her training.

Annie Leonhart proved to be very good at hand to hand combat and many fans were wondering what martial art inspired her moves. It closely resembled Muay Thai, which uses both hands and legs to strike the other.

5 She Tried To Stay Away From Mikasa

Mikasa Ackerman was very protective of her adoptive brother, Eren, who always got into trouble. At the 104th Training Corps Annie did her best to avoid Mikasa. Because Mikasa was able to defend her advances and probably she would have lost against Eren’s sister.

Many fans would have loved to see whether Annie was strong enough to fight Mikasa, but they never fought during the training. They were both in the top five and viewers think Annie didn’t rank on top because she didn’t take the training seriously.

4 She Spared Armin's Life

Annie and Armin grew very fond of each other. It seemed Annie respected him a lot and even liked him to the extent that actually hindered her plans. Fans were surprised to see when Annie transformed into her Titan form and began her rampage, she actually stopped and spared Armin.

Later she even admitted it to be a mistake and she couldn’t tell why she wasn’t able to kill him.

3 She Was Able To Crystalize Her Titan Body

Annie was special even as a Titan. She could regenerate and crystallize parts of her body as protection. This made her nearly impossible to kill as she could protect her nape from attacks. Later, when she was cornered during her attack on the Scout Regiment.

She had no other choice but to crystalize her nape so no one could inflict any fatal damage on her.

2 Her Scream Could Attract Other Titans

Among the many remarkable abilities, Annie’s Titan could attract other Titans by screaming. This was actually a very odd scene when Annie was trying to get away from a trap and she called upon the others. Every Titan within range ignored everything else and ran to the Female Titan to devour her.

Fans were shocked by the scenes and learned that Annie wasn’t going to be an easy opponent.

1 Her Full Body Was Crystallised

When she was captured and the military wanted to interrogate her, Annie was flooded by memories of her father. She felt her father was waiting for her and that triggered the crystallization.

Completely out of her control, Annie’s human body was crystallized and at that moment there was no human equipment that could break through that tough material. Fans were wondering if she was dead or there would be a way to get her out alive.
