WHAT YOU MISSED IN Attack on Titan SEASON 3

attack-on-titan-s3-header

Unlike every other season of Attack On Titan, the first part of Season 3 (known as the "Uprising arc") barely featured any Titans, focusing instead on the Scouts overthrowing the government and learning of its ancient machinations in subjugating the populace. The biggest revelation from Season 3 is that Titan abilities can be transferred. When an unintelligent Titan (or "Pure Titan") consumes the spinal fluid of an Intelligent Titan, the Pure Titan gains the intelligence and abilities of its prey. Eren demonstrates this by consuming an ampule, gaining the Titan Armor ability.

Instead of fighting naked monstrosities, the Scouts primarily clashed with the true king Rod Reiss, the Military Police Brigade and its special Anti-Personnel Control Squad helmed by government hitman Kenny The Ripper. So, instead of the Scouts fighting Titans, we got Scouts fighting humans wielding combination web-shooter-guns.

Speaking of Kenny, this cowboy ne'er-do-well is actually Levi's uncle, who raised the malnourished orphan into the series' ersatz Rorschach. That's not a joke: Levi was based on Watchmen's Rorschach, while Commander Erwen was based on Ozymandias. Incidentally, Kenny, Levi and Mikasa are such efficient killers because they are Ackermans, a clan that once served as the King's personal guard, sporting an immunity to having their memories rewritten.

Yeah, apparently memories can be altered using the special powers of the Founding Titan, whose abilities have been passed down for generations by the royal family ritualistically cannibalizing one another. Eren's father Grisha Yeager disrupted this ritual by smooshing all of the royal family, save for Rod Reiss and his illegitimate daughter Historia. To break the cycle of subjugation, Grisha turned Eren into a Titan, passing down the stolen Founding Titan ability by having Eren unwittingly devour him.

Finally, Rod Reiss turns himself into the supermassive (read: "Thicc") Titan, only for Historia to deliver the final blow before being crowned as Queen. Kenny dies, but gives Levi a syringe filled with Titan-transforming juice.

SNEAK PEEK at Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2

While Attack On Titan Season 3 has been the only season to be split into two parts, a scene from Season 3 Part 2 was actually slipped into the ending credits of Chapter #49:

WHAT TO EXPECT in Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2

Unlike the 12 episodes comprising the first part of Season 3, Part 2 will only feature 10 episodes (Chapters #50-59), covering the "Return to Shinganshina" arc from the manga. Keeping in mind that we deliberately chose not to read the manga, what can we expect to happen in Season 3 Part 2?

Based off of Erwin's narration, the Scouts' main goal is to retake Wall Maria using Eren's armor abilities. Given its location, Grisha's mysterious basement will probably be explored as well. Considering the steam buffeting him in the sneak peek, perhaps Levi will turn himself into a Titan before Eren and Mikasa "betray" him.

Above all else, Part 2 will compensate for Season 3's lack of Titan fights by giving us all Titan fights, all the time. There's a daisy chain of Titan transformation lights in the trailer, suggesting that a surge of Titans will suddenly appear outside Wall Maria.

What's up with the Titans' glowing red eyes, though? Who is standing next to Reiner? Are we stuck with "Red Swan" as an intro song? We'll have to wait until April 28th to find out.
