Fans are petitioning author Hajime Isayama to rewrite the controversial final chapter of the Attack on Titan manga.
A petition on Change.org addressed to Isayama titled, "Write a satisfying, alternative ending to AOT!" currently has 5,597 signatures at the time of writing. The opening text of the petition reads, "Currently, Shingeki no Kyojin (or Attack on Titan) was one of the greatest manga series I have ever read. I believe a lot of the fandom is very disappointed with the current ending, the ending feels very rushed to me and to a lot of the fandom."
The petition text goes on to list a number of detailed, spoiler-filled criticisms of the ending the treatment of certain characters and a sudden shift in tone from the rest of the series. It goes on to speculate that either the publisher Kodansha or Isayama's editor was responsible for the changes "to perhaps fit a more 'shounen' type of ending." It also emphasizes that fans should not harass Isayama over their disappointment with the ending.
The final collected volume of the Attack on Titan manga is already confirmed to contain extra pages not included in the original ending. The manga's final serialized chapter was published in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on April 9.
Attack on Titan has been serialized in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine since September 2009 and concluded its 11-year run this month with the publication of Chapter 139. To date, the manga has released 33 tankōbon volumes. The upcoming Volume 34 includes Chapters 135-139. Attack on Titan Volume 34 is slated to go on sale in Japanese on June 9 and in English on Oct. 19.
The Attack on Titan anime premiered its fourth and final season Dec. 2020 in Japanese and Jan. 2021 in English. Attack on Titan: The Final Season is currently on hiatus, slated to return for Part 2 in the winter of 2022.
