When it comes to Attack On Titan, nothing is off the tables. Right from shocking deaths to having the most unexpected and craziest reveals time and again, fans have seen it all. However, fans may not realize that there were certain details and reveals that made it different from any other shounen anime ever released.

This article will explore 10 major things that completely changed the show. Needless to say, it does spoil a little bit of future episodes and a tiny bit from the manga, so for fans who have only watched season 1, it's recommended to at least watch the remaining seasons before going ahead with this article.

10 Erin’s “Death” And True Identity

Zeke meets Eren

When Attack on Titan aired, nobody knew what to expect from it. However, many people knew what not to expect - for their protagonist to die early on in the series. This is exactly what happened when Eren got eaten by a titan, right in front of a frightened Armin. Everybody's jaws dropped to the floor, and only a minute later, they dropped even further because Eren re-emerged as a titan!

9 Annie Is The Female Titan

The moment the first female titan made her appearance, everybody knew it was Annie. The biggest giveaway was the blond hair and if that wasn't enough, Eren knew it was her the moment he saw her use the same self defense tactics. This added new elements to the titan theory, which instigated that titans were nothing but mindless beasts, because clearly, Annie was more than in control of her actions.

8 Titans Inside The Walls

Colossal Titan inside of the wall (Attack On Titan)

This was one of the biggest game changers in the show, after the fact that humans can be turned into titans. The reason why this one was shocking because not only was there no foreshadowing whatsoever, but it created more questions than answers. The most important question was - how were these walls even built?

7 The Hidden Knowledge Of The Church Of Walls

For the entirety of the series, followers of this religion are not given any importance, but are shown to be in important and influential positions in society.

They're perceived as religious nuts by the common people, but everybody is shocked when it is revealed in the later seasons of the show that some of the high ranking members of this church were actually aware of the titans inside the walls.

6 Reiner And Bert Are Traitors

This one was a double whammy, because not only did no one expect there to be any traitors within the walls (why would anyone betray their own kind, seeing how they and the fans believed there were no humans outside that they can betray them to), but also because betrayal came from the most unexpected source - the Survey Corps recruits themselves.

Reiner and Bert are not only traitors but they're also titans who are directly responsible for the deaths of many innocent people.

5 What's Hidden In The Basement

Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt AOT

This was one of the more negative changes in the show, or rather, the opposite - it was extremely anti climatic. Fans expected all their questions to be answered, ranging from how and why titans are created, to how the walls were made. However, not only did it not answer any one of those questions, but it simply paved way for even bigger questions, and the possibilities of a world lying beyond the walls the humans lived in.

4 Ymir's Conflicting Loyalties

Ymir was a fairly irrelevant character till it was revealed that she too is a titan. However, what was most interesting about her was that unlike Reiner, she wasn't sure who she was loyal to most. Was it Annie, who she clearly had feelings for, or was it the other side who clearly had enough clout to force her to become a spy? She's remained a wild card in the anime, and no one knows what's going on in her mind.

3 Mikasa's Suicidal Spree

Attack on Titan Mikasa

After Eren was supposedly dead, Mikasa kind of lost her bearings. Eren was her entire world and she existed because of him (literally and figuratively). So when she assumed him to be dead, she went on a suicidal spree.

She wanted to go out fighting titans, and one could see the calm on her face when she saw a titan come for her - forcing the audience to acknowledge something very chilling about the show - the fact that this isn't yet another anime show aimed at young adults. It's much more serious than that.

2 Colossal Titan's Size

This titan went as high as 60 meters. To put that into perspective, not only was it larger than the Beast titan, but Eren's titan barely reached its ankle. This again raised many unanswered questions - on what basis are the titan shapes, forms and abilities granted? Are they random or manufactured in a lab somewhere?

1 Partial Titan

Eren partially transformed into a titan

The titans being humans was one thing, but for them to retain their consciousness was a reveal that was on another level. While Annie displayed her remarkable martial arts skills, what even overshadowed her powers was the fact that Reiner and Bertolt were able to manipulate portions of their Titan bodies in order to preserve energy or increase their defenses.
