The story of Attack on Titan is a graphic and tragic one, and more than a few characters in this grim narrative have earned the viewers' sympathies due to their difficult upbringing, their relatable goals and motives, the sacrifices that they make, and more. Even antagonists such as Reiner Braun have their sympathetic side.

However, there are some other Attack on Titan characters who deserve far less sympathy or admiration, or perhaps none at all. An unsympathetic character might lack relatable goals and worldviews, or they simply never had any major hardships to overcome. Or perhaps the character is actually the cause of someone else's misery and misfortune. For one reason or another, certain characters just failed to win over the audience.

10 Levi Ackerman Can Handle Himself

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 6 Levi

Even if a character is difficult to sympathize with, it doesn't necessarily mean they are a wicked villain or a boring character. Far from it. Some characters, such as Captain Levi Ackerman, are meant to be thrilling rather than sympathetic and inspire cheers rather than tears.

It's true that Levi had a rough upbringing in the Underworld, but then his uncle Kenny Ackerman trained and raised him, and Levi hardened his heart. Now, he is easy to cheer for as a powerful hero, but he's not meant to be terribly sympathetic. He's tough enough to handle just about anything.

9 Gabi Braun Was The One Who Killed Sasha

Gabi in Attack on Titan

The warrior candidate known as Gabi Braun is loosely meant to be the Marley Empire's version of Eren Yeager, a hot-headed character who charges into the fray and gets away with it. In some vague ways, Gabi is somewhat sympathetic, since she wants Eldians to be free of the "taint" of the Paradis island people.

It's not wrong for Gabi to want what's best for the Eldians living in the Marley Empire. However, Gabi is obnoxious and vicious, and she is the one who killed Sasha Braus, a fan-favorite. The way she's going, Gabi will inspire few viewers to support her.

8 Kitz Woermann Tried To Have Eren Killed

Kitz

The officer Kitz Woermann made a rather poor impression in Attack on Titan's first season, when he panicked in the face of Eren's Attack Titan form. Kitz gave Eren no chance to explain himself; instead, Kitz ordered all available forces to fire on Eren and destroy him.

Strictly speaking, Kitz was just trying to defend the city and carry out his duty, rather than act out of malice. But he should have restrained himself a bit and given Eren the opportunity to explain what was going on. And there seems to be no particular reason to like Kitz Woermann anyway.

7 Yelena Wishes For Marley's Destruction

Yelena looking down at someone in Attack on Titan.

Yelena is a woman from the mainland who, as she explained it, saw her home nation invaded and occupied by Marleyan forces. She and Onyankopon infiltrated Marley's military as soldiers, then arrived at Paradis island to support the Eldians there.

In particular, Yelena is intensely loyal to Zeke Yeager and believes in his mission. It's nice of Yelena to have a role model, but she is rather bloodthirsty and merciless, and she has few, if any, likable character traits. She's not easy to love for any viewer.

6 Annie Leonhart Doesn't Care About The Marleyans Or Eldians

annie leonhart attack on titan

Annie Leonhart was no ordinary soldier. She and her cohorts Reiner and Bertolt Hoover were warriors of the Marley Empire, tasked with finding and retrieving the Founding Titan by any means necessary. Annie took her mission seriously, but she had no love for Marley or the Eldians. She disliked both parties.

Instead, Annie cared only for herself and scorned everyone around her, especially Reiner. Annie didn't care about Marley's well-being or that of the Eldians, and her self-centered ways endeared her to very few viewers. She later ended up captured, and as of where the anime currently stands, she is still locked in that crystalline formation. What comes next?

5 Willy Tybur Declared War On Paradis Island

Willy Tybur from Attack on Titan looking sullen.

During his lifetime, Willy Tybur controlled the Marley Empire from the shadows and enjoyed his status as a nobleman. He was an Eldian, but he had no love of the Eldian people of Paradis island, and he even gave a speech to fan the flames of war against that island and its natives.

Willy was a polite and dignified person, which counts for something, but that doesn't make him a particularly lovable or relatable person. In fact, he acted mainly as a plot device to push the Marley Empire to war against Paradis island. Who's going to sympathize with that?

4 Floch Forster Is One Of The Yeagerist Radicals

Floch looking angry - AOT

Floch Forster said and did rather little in Attack on Titan to win over audiences' hearts, and he was, at best, a background character. He had few moments of glory, and he doesn't have much in the way of a tragic or fascinating backstory, either. In fact, he largely considered himself a coward at heart.

When the war against Marley flared to life, Floch decided to take action. He joined the Yeagerist group of radicals, seeing both Eren Yeager and Zeke Yeager as the key to the Eldian people's future. He still isn't sympathetic, though; he is little more than a militant radical.

3 Hitch Dreyse Is The Military Police Brigade Officer Who Belittles Others

Hitch _ Military Police _ Attack on Titan

Hitch Dreyse is a rather sneaky character who wanted the glory of being in the Military Brigade without doing any of the heavy lifting, but she ended up having to do a lot of paperwork anyway, which annoyed her. She often teased and belittled other people, including Marlowe.

Hitch isn't very nice, though she's also not necessarily evil or hopeless. She dislikes collateral damage, and will even fuss at Levi himself if civilians are hurt during battle. Hitch also visited Annie's petrified body from time to time, which isn't so bad. As a whole, though, fans won't find any substantial reasons to feel for Hitch and her worldview.

2 General Theo Magath Can't Win Over Any Hearts With His No-Nonsense Personality

Attack On Titan Theo Magath

Theo Magath served as an example of Marleyan military commanders, and he appeared very early in Season 4. He commanded the warrior unit, and it was he who allowed Gabi to launch her daring plan to blow up that armored train with a bundle of grenades. At least Magath is willing to let his charges show their creative side.

Magath isn't the evilest person to ever live, but at the same time, his strict, no-nonsense personality is less than endearing, and nothing about his character will win over viewers' hearts or inspire them to root for him. Magath is doing nothing more or less than his duty to the brutal Marley Empire.

1 Alma Was A Terrible Mother To Historia Reiss

attack on titan alma historia reiss mother mom

Historia Reiss had a difficult childhood, partly due to the fact that her mother, Alma, resented her very birth. Historia was royalty through her father, Rod Reiss, but her mother Alma was a maidservant. Historia's half-brothers and half-sisters had a different mother entirely.

Alma may have been nicer in earlier years, but during Historia's flashbacks, Alma was intentionally cold and distant with her daughter, and tried to keep her at arm's length. Alma even struck Historia when the girl tried to hug her, and Alma acted vain and self-important by dressing well and going to town every night. Alma is vaguely sympathetic for wanting a better life, but in practice, she is nearly impossible to support, and there's no excuse for how she raised her daughter. Alma won't be missed.
