Unlike many other stories, the relationships in Attack On Titan focus on family more than friendships or romantic relationships. Many of the characters in the manga come from the same bloodline. While Mikasa and Levi are part of the Ackerman clan and several families have joined Marley's Warrior Unit, none have been as important as the Fritz family.

A lot has happened since King Fritz used Ymir to take over the world and none of the events in the manga would have taken place if it weren't for them. Fans may need to remember the bloodline's history before the series ends. Here are the most important things to know.

10 Ymir Was Hunted And Eaten At The Order of King Fritz

Ymir

After letting a pig escape, Ymir was hunted down by King Fritz's followers. She found a tree to hide inside of. Upon entering it, she fell down and connected to what would end up giving her the Titans' powers. King Fritz forced her to destroy Marley and had three children with her.

After an enemy of his tried to kill him with a spear, she went in front of him and was killed. He forced their daughters to eat Ymir. However, she lived on in the coordinate and was forced to create titans for 2,000 years.

9 Karl Credited The End Of The Great Titan War To A Fictional Hero

Nine Titans

No longer having any enemies worth fighting, the Eldians began to battle each other. The Marleyans saw this as a way to take the Nine Titans from them. They managed to obtain seven. In the chaos, the Tybur family worked with Karl Fritz, the king of the Eldians at that time, to bring an end to the war.

Karl felt guilty for what his ancestors had done to the Marleyans and wanted to atone. He and the Tyburs created a hero named Helos and convinced the Marleyans that he defeated the Eldians. For 100 years they believed this lie, not knowing that Karl was their true savior.

8 Karl Created Paradis As A Last Attempt To Be At Peace

AOT Walls

Karl ended up taking the Eldians to Paradis, an island where he hoped they would live the rest of their lives in. By using his Founding Titan, he created three walls out of Colossal Titans and erased the Eldians' memories.

As a result, he was able to create any history and reality that he wanted. He convinced the Eldians that the rest of the human race was killed by the titans. To him, Paradis became his final chance at peace. To others, Paradis was a pen and they were cattle.

7 Uri Inherited The Founding Titan

Uri

The Founding Titan continued to be passed down to members of the Fritz family, known as the Reiss family once they went to Paradis. Uri would end up inheriting the Founding Titan and was possessed by Karl.

He understood Karl's actions and was forced to follow them, despite disagreeing before inheriting the Founding Titan. Thirteen years later, as his term was coming to an end, his niece, Frieda, became the next in line to control the Eldians.

6 The Eldian Restorationists Were Sent To Paradis

Meanwhile, some members of the Fritz family stayed in Marley and went into hiding. The Marleyans treated the Eldians the way they used to be treated. Dina, a descendant of Ymir's, and Grisha, the leader of the Eldian Restorationists, fell in love as they fought for their rights.

They had a son, Zeke, and tried to turn him into their greatest weapon against Marley. However, Zeke told the Marleyan government about what his parents were doing and they were sent to Paradis, along with the rest of the Restorationists. All of them turned into titans, with Grisha becoming the Attack Titan. He started a new life in the walls.

5 Zeke Considered Himself The Last Restorationist

Grisha and Dina had Zeke become a member of Marley's Warrior Unit. Once he betrayed them, he became a candidate and eventually inherited the Beast Titan. Throughout his life, he became very close to Tom, the Beast Titan before him. The two developed the father/son relationship that they lost.

Before Tom died, he and Zeke realized that the Founding Titan could make it so that Eldians would no longer be able to create children, bringing an end to their pain. This became Zeke's goal as he considered himself to be the last Eldian Restorationist.

4 Grisha Stole The Founding Titan

Attack on Titan's Founding Titan

Once the other Warriors broke down Paradis' walls, Grisha found Frieda, her siblings, and her parents. He begged her to stop the Warriors. However, since she was possessed by Karl, she refused. After speaking to a future version of his second son, Eren, he used his Attack Titan to take the Founding Titan and killed everyone there, except for Frieda's father, Rod.

Knowing that he would soon die as he had been the Attack Titan for years, Grisha passed both to Eren. As the Attack Titan has the ability to see a future inheritor's memories, Grisha knew that all of this was part of Eren's plan, even though Eren wouldn't know it for a very long time.

3 Historia's Childhood Was Filled With Abuse

Krista's book

Rod had another child, Frieda's half-sister. Since Historia was an illegitimate child, Paradis could not know about her. She was raised at a farm where she was neglected and abused by nearly everyone around her, including her mother. The only person that ever showed her kindness was Frieda, who took care of her and taught her many things, including how to read.

Though they were close, Frieda always used the Founding Titan to make Historia forget that she existed. After Grisha ate Frieda, Rod gave Historia a new life and sent her to the military. She became a strong soldier and gained a lot of friends, not knowing that one of them was the son of her sister's killer.

2 Historia Assumed The Throne

Historia

Historia was shocked to learn that she was a princess and that the military wanted her to overthrow her father. However, once she finally spoke to Rod and learned that Eren took the Founding Titan from her family, she considered joining him.

In the end, her loyalty was with the Survey Corps and she killed Rod after he threatened Paradis by turning into a titan himself. The Eldians respected her and she became the best queen that they had in 100 years.

1 Eren Undid A Century Of The Fritz's Plans

Eren meets Zeke on the Cart Titan

When Zeke went to Paradis, he finally found his younger brother. Though the two were enemies at first, they started working together in order to save the world. They gained many followers. However, Eren only pretended to agree with Zeke's plan of ending the Eldian race so that he could destroy all of the nations that opposed Paradis. Zeke tried to convince Eren that Grisha had manipulated him by going through their father's memories.

This was when Grisha was able to see his sons and followed Eren's order to defeat the Fritz family. Eren has undone everything that the Fritz family worked for in the past 100 years.
