A Show of Support Led to Tears From Isayama

Isayama made his first-ever appearance in the United States at an Anime NYC panel on Nov. 19. One fan asked, "Did you know how you wanted to end Attack on Titan from the very beginning?" Isayama himself expressed uncertainty about how he ended Attack on Titan. "I still struggle on this point," he said. "I'm very sorry about that." Despite the mass backlash surrounding the controversial ending for Attack on Titan, the crowd still welcomed Isayama with open arms.

With tears in his eyes, Isayama thanked the audience for their continuous support. "Carrying heavy feelings, I was down for a long time until yesterday when I met fans during the signing. Fans told me the ending was great and that they loved the ending, and it made me happy, and coming to New York was a great experience for me," he said.

Attack on Titan's Creator Addressed the Ending's Backlash

At only 19 years old, Isayama created Attack on Titan as a 65-page one-shot, but changed the story to begin serialization in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 2009. The series ended in 2021, but some fans expressed frustration about the ending's issues with character development and the dramatic changes to protagonist Eren Yeager. Additionally, the multiple plot holes confused people. Isayama and some staff members had even received death threats over the finale for Attack on Titan. In May 2021, the mangaka addressed the backlash surrounding the Attack on Titan ending. Isayama revealed his struggles with drawing the climax. Consequently, he apologized for disappointing fans and even asked them to be kind to him before his appearance at Anime NYC. Following the manga's ending, Isayama added eight additional pages to Volume 34.

Ahead of the third part of Attack on Titan's fourth and final season, there was a special event held on Nov. 12, which featured live music performances and readings from the anime's vocal talent. In celebration of the event, Attack on Titan released a new manga-accurate key visual and Brave Order character illustrations.

The Attack on Titan manga series is available in select retailers and online platforms. The anime adaptation will air its final part of the fourth season in 2023.
