The people outside and behind the walls are made differently. Some are able to endure traumatic events and remain the same, while others who cope differently are changed completely. It's miraculous that anyone survived life within the Walls of Paradis long enough to uncover the truth about their history. The journey to the truth was long and tortuous, and the characters in Attack On Titan witnessed horrors that would send anyone straight to a psychiatric ward for the rest of their lives.

Considering that man-eating titans were a part of everyday life on the island of Paradis, and the truth revealed that this unbearable lifestyle was manufactured by a prejudiced government, there were some characters that dealt with these circumstances rather well. Others, however, were forever changed by the anguish and rage they felt towards the people responsible for their pain.

10 Changed: Flock's Traumatic Experiences Turned Him Into An Extremist

Flock First Battle Flock Tells Hange To Be Quiet

When Flock joined the Scout Regiment, he had no idea what was in store for him. He seemed to have idealistic expectations of battling titans. After his first traumatizing experience in battle, Flock was upset with his team, believing that they were all inherently selfish. After the time skip, Flock’s hatred for Marleyans intensified. He now appears to be extremely radical in his belief that Marleyans must be destroyed by any means necessary, even if that means harming his own comrades who think differently.

9 Same: Hange Is Still Eccentric And Silly Despite Being In A Position Of Power

hange thunder spear

Zoe Hange made her debut as an eccentric titan-loving weirdo early on in the series. She was in charge of experimenting with titans and finding out as much about their anatomy as she could. The more time she spent with titans, the more she grew fond of them. She’s expressive and makes no attempts to hide her excitement much to the aggravation of her comrade Levi Ackerman. As the series continued, Zoe showed that she may be different, but she’s also a skilled fighter and a competent commander. She also gives viewers much-needed comedic relief and that hasn’t changed much as time has gone on.

8 Changed: Jean Has Become More Level Headed And Relinquished His Aggressive Ways

jean attack on titan

Jean was very arrogant when he first encountered Armin, Eren, and Mikasa. He was more concerned with trying to compete with Eren and looking heroic. Jean began to change with every battle fought and comrade lost. He can still be blunt at times, but he isn’t as angry and aggressive as he used to be.

When Flock was enthusiastically killing Marleyans after they secretly infiltrated Marley territory, Jean questioned why he kept the same hateful mentality. It was interesting to see Jean make these sentiments when he started out as such a hothead.

7 Same: Connie Is Still A Peacemaker

connie attack on titan

Connie has remained pretty levelheaded despite all of the pain and suffering he’s endured. Even after discovering that his entire family and the citizens of his hometown had been turned into titans, he was able to calmly report his findings to his superiors. Now that the friends he's grown up with seem to be split in their beliefs, he still wants to give his friends the benefit of the doubt and is hopeful Eren still has the best of intentions. He's always been loyal and wants to think the best of his friends and of every situation.

6 Changed: Armin Has Taken On A Solemn Persona Due To The Reality Of War

ARmin Before and After Colossal Titan

Armin was extremely kind-hearted and hopeful for the future. In the face of devastation, he remained positive and never harbored any resentment. He also joined the Scout Regiment in support of his friends. Armin's intellect is his greatest attribute, his strategies helping the scouts on many occasions. There wasn't an immediate change after Armin became the Colossal Titan. However, he would soon become a different version of himself. As described by Eren, Armin has now taken on the feelings of the previous Colossal Titan owner, Berthold. He not only seems to be infatuated with Annie (Berthold's crush), but he also believes that more can be accomplished by reasoning with the Marleyans rather than fighting against them no matter how cruel or stubborn they may be.

5 Same: Sasha Remained True To Herself Until The Very End

Anime Attack On Titan Sasha Eats Lobster

Sasha remained true to herself all the way up until her tragic end. She was a selfless and kind individual, with her love of food being one of the most charming things about her. Sasha was an expert marksman and a great asset to her squad. A few years earlier, she risked her life to save a child in eminent danger. Staying true to her compassionate nature, in her last act as a soldier, she couldn't bring herself to harm a child even while in the middle of a war zone. Even with the hatred that remained between Eldians and Marleyans, Sasha was able to win over a Marleyan chef with the same personality her comrades grew to know and love.

4 Changed: Zeke Yeager Revealed Himself To Be An Enemy Of Marley And Paradis

Zeke Hangs Out By The Fire in Attack on Titan

Zeke was the obvious main antagonist at the end of Season 3. He slaughtered most of the Survey Corps and had fun while doing it. In the wake of Reiner and Berthold’s betrayal,  Zeke still managed to keep his title as the most hated villain of the series during the Battle of Shiganshina.

However, once Zeke’s complicated history was revealed, fans learn that Zeke’s motives weren’t what they appeared to be. Zeke is still manipulative and untrustworthy, but he's no longer a Marleyan ally. In actuality, his goal is to liberate his people. Though his methods are questionable, he believes he’s doing what’s best for Eldians.

3 Same: Levi Ackerman Is The Same Titan-Hating Emotionless Neat Freak He's Always Been

Levi Ackerman From Attack On Titan

Levi hasn't changed a bit. He still remains calm and emotionless for the most part. He’s a strong section commander that always does what needs to be done in order to claim victory. He is ruthless on the battlefield and showed fans that he remains so in his most recent battle with Zeke. His fighting abilities are unmatched, and he is respected by everyone he comes in contact with. Levi is still the independent neat freak who cares deeply for his comrades whether he cares to express it or not.

2 Changed: Eren Yeager Cared Less About His Friends The More He Taps Into The Founding Titan's Powers

Eren Before And After Time Skip

When the series began, Eren was a brave kid who had the drive to fight to protect those he cared about from bullies and titans alike. He didn't have much physical strength to back it up, but it didn't stop him. After the attack on Wall Maria, Eren had only one goal, to kill all titans. His mother's murder fueled his hatred and prompted him to join the Scout Regiment. When Eren and the rest of his comrades learned the truth about their history and the history of titans, Eren became more and more withdrawn.

Eventually, Eren would begin to act on his own, much to the disappointment and anger of his comrades. As the series draws to a close, Eren has become completely different from the overzealous kid that only wanted to protect his friends. He now gives little regard to casualties and isn't concerned about the approval of his friends and superiors.

1 Same: Mikasa Remained Loyal To Eren Despite His Change In Personality

Though it pains her to see Eren become someone she doesn't recognize, she still holds out hope for his redemption.
