Here we go again.

Now that HBO Max has announced that Zack Snyder's Justice League will stream on the platform in 2021, fans are ramping up their push for a director's cut of Suicide Squad — aptly titled the Ayer Cut.

Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad follows a team of villains who are recruited by the government to save the world from Superman-like threats. The film was panned by critics and fans alike and, following its release, reports began to surface that studio interference and forced cuts by Warner Bros. led to the subpar reception. Similar to Snyder's Justice League, which actually debuted after Suicide Squad, fans began to demand a director's version of the film, something that Ayer has commented on multiple times.

Now, with excitement about the Snyder Cut's release building, AT&T, which owns WarnerMedia and HBO Max, sent out some positive signs that the company may be open to exploring the Ayer Cut.

Should the Ayer Cut ever see the light of day, fans can expect much more of Jared Leto's Joker. Ayer confirmed that there are hours of footage of Leto as the Clown Prince of Crime collecting dust somewhere, and he originally planned for him to have a much larger part in the DC Extended Universe movie. He also teased a larger and more fulfilling role for Harley Quinn and a stronger connection to Justice League.

In the meantime, HBO Max and Snyder are prepping for production to begin on the Snyder Cut. The film will reportedly cost $20-$30 million to complete and will include new visual effects. There is also a possibility that some of the original cast members will voice new dialogue for the film.

While Suicide Squad is viewed as a critical failure, the film grossed $746.8 million worldwide and spawned two sequels. 2019's Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) focuses on the titular character following her breakup with the Joker and James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad will serve as a soft reboot for the franchise.

Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz, and Cara Delevingne. It is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra-HD Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray 3D and DVD.

Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Zack Snyder's Justice League will premiere exclusively on HBO Max in 2021.
