In the three years since Atomic Blonde was released, fan demand for a sequel has built up. Now, the movie's lead, Charlize Theron, revealed that Atomic Blonde 2 is being written and that it could end up on Netflix.

"We took [AB2] to them and Scott Stuber [Head of Original Films at Netflix] was really interested in it," Theron said. "We talked to him about it extensively, and we're in the process of writing it right now. That character was set up in a way where she didn't really reveal much of herself. So I feel like there's a lot of potential there. The bar's pretty high, but we’re excited about it."

Theron's comments follow up on previous remarks regarding how Atomic Blonde 2 would be released. In August 2019, Atomic Blonde director David Leitch said, "a streaming service is into [Atomic Blonde 2]," while an April 2020 report indicated that Netflix was tackling the project.

The original Atomic Blonde was a theatrical release from Focus Features. Based on the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, the film is set during the height of the Cold War and sees Lorraine Broughton (Theron) travel to Berlin to investigate the death of another agent. However, she gets swept up in a web of deceit and betrayal along the way.

Directed by David Leitch, Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and John Goodman. A release date for its sequel has not been announced.
