Astonish Factory announces changes to Mike Kunkel's 'Sokmunster'

Official Press Release

Toluca Lake, CA -- March 9, 2004 -- The Astonish Factory is thrilled to announce that its first children's book for all ages, The Land of Sokmunster, will be released with a slight format change. Originally solicited as a 48-page trade paperback, Sokmunster has become bigger and better. The Land of Sokmunster is now a printed hardcover (with no dust jacket) and has grown to 60 pages.

The Land of Sokmunster (April/May 2004, $14,95, ISBN: 0-9721259-2-2; LCCN: 2003114291, 8 ½" x 10 ½", 60 pages, full color) tells the unusual story of what happens when we all lose something precious. Twelve-year-old Sam takes us on his journey to the Land of Sokmunster where he meets Spike, the lost sok with attitude, King Jacque, the ruler sok of Sokmunster, and the Moth King, the villainous enemy of the soks. Sam will come to find that this is a land of many wondrous things. It is a land that is filled with creatures big and small, good and bad. A land where friends are made and lessons learned. A land…that is closer than we think.

"As we were telling the story, we felt we just had a lot more we wanted to include," said co-creator Mike Kunkel, explaining the format change. "And as we expanded the story," said Randy Heuser, Sokmunster's co-creator, "it took on a life of its own. It has been a journey all its own to get this book to stores, but we're very proud of it. We believe readers will enjoy it and find that it has been well worth the wait."

The Land of Sokmunster will be available at bookstores, libraries and comic book shops everywhere. It is being released simultaneously with the first in a line of collectable plush toys, Spike the Sokmunster.

The Astonish Factory encourages readers to: "Remember your childhood…and pass it on."
