An Assassin's Creed insider claimed the next installment in the series will occur during the Aztec Empire, setting the game in Central America for the first time.As reported by Comicbook, popular YouTube Jeremy Penter, also known as ACG, posted the report to Twitter by simply stating, "Next AC game will be Aztecs." Although Penter has reported on things before, it isn't common, and he has yet to give any information to verify the report. He refrained from commenting on possible platforms, details on the setting, or even rumored release windows or a potential title.RELATED: The Assassin's Creed Delisting Controversy Highlights the Issue With Digital Libraries

Any official news likely won't come until one of Ubisoft's upcoming events. The company recently announced an Ubisoft Forward event in September, which coincides with previous statements that it would reveal the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise sometime that same month. Reportedly, the developer plans to "reveal updates and news on multiple games and projects" coming from its various teams. Ubisoft also intends to do a showcase at Gamescon in August, though it's remained reticent on details about what to expect. This marks the first significant event of the year for the company, which sat out on Summer Game Fest in June.

These events match earlier reports which suggested Ubisoft planned a massive showcase later this year. According to the rumors, Ubisoft has over 20 titles in the works, either news entries to an established series, remakes, or entirely new titles altogether. Some of these include its upcoming Assassin's Creed titles, such as Assassin's Creed Rift and Assassin's Creed Infinity.

The Future of Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed Rift is something of a mysterious entity, as there are few details about the title. Initially conceptualized as a DLC for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Assassin's Creed Rift transformed into its own standalone game and is expected to release sometime in late 2022/early 2023. Perhaps the more intriguing title is Assassin's Creed Infinity, which looks to be Ubisoft's riskiest idea yet. Reportedly, Infinity will be a massive online platform that combines locations from the previous games. According to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, Infinity won't be free-to-play, but the "huge" game will "have what players already have in all the other Assassin's Creed games."

There is no release window for Assassin's Creed Rift or Assassin's Creed Infinity, and Ubisoft has yet to comment on any details for its next mainline game in the franchise.
