An industry insider appeared to refute earlier reports that the next Assassin's Creed title would take place in the Aztec Empire, though he left room for potential DLC or other entries to do so.

Famed gaming news reporter Jason Schreier replied to a Reddit post refuting the leak, stating that Assassin's Creed Rift is the next title in the series and takes place in Baghdad. "The next AC game is Rift, which is set in Baghdad," he wrote. "After that will be AC Infinity, and while that's going to include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you want to call them, I've heard about the main two and neither of them are Aztec." While responding to another Reddit post referencing the rumor, Schreier noted that there is still a possibility there could be an Aztec DLC he just hasn't heard about yet.

"It's definitely possible that there's some DLC or spin-off somewhere featuring Aztecs that I haven't heard about," Schreier said, referencing a previous report from ACG, a game reviewer on Twitter and YouTube, that the next major title in the Assassin's Creed franchise takes place in the Aztec Empire. "But the tweet specifically said "next AC game" which is not true as far as I know. The next AC game is Rift. Should be announced in September."

September references Assassin's Creed developer Ubisoft's planned showcase, which promises to reveal details about the franchise's future. Rumors about a major Ubisoft event surfaced in April, claiming the company would unveil information on over 20 titles in the works, either news entries to an established series, remakes, or entirely new titles altogether. Assassin's Creed Rift and Assassin's Creed Infinity appeared likely candidates for reveals, as both remain mysterious entities for the developer.

Ubisoft revealed few details about Assassin's Creed Rift over the years since the reveal of its title. The game transformed into a standalone title after beginning life as a DLC concept for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Beyond that, the news that it is set in Baghdad remains the first new detail released. The other upcoming entry, Assassin's Creed Infinity, might prove Ubisoft's most ambitious game yet. Reportedly a massive paid-for online platform, Infinity supposedly takes place within several previously seen historical locations.

There is no release window for Assassin's Creed Rift. Ubisoft Forward, the reported planned event for more Assassin's Creed reveals, streams live globally through dedicated Twitch and YouTube channels on September 10.
