In a clear sign of confidence in the property, a sequel to 20th Century Fox's "Assassin's Creed" film is already in motion -- more than nine months before the release date of the first movie. As reported Friday afternoon by The Tracking Board, production company New Regency is moving forward with a sequel for the video game-based film, with star Michael Fassbender in tow.

The first "Assassin's Creed" film is set to start Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, along with director Justin Kurzel -- who all worked together on 2015's "MacBeth" adaptation. The movie is set in the same world as Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed" video games, but is not a direct adaptation of a previous story. Here's the official logline: "Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

"Assassin's Creed" is scheduled for release on Dec. 21.
