Ubisoft Forward gave fans a better look at the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage, the next entry in the beloved franchise.

A stunning new trailer showcases the start of Basim's story as he joins the Hidden Ones in Baghdad. The story takes place twenty years before Assassin's Creed Valhalla, showcasing how Basim eventually joined the Brotherhood, who the writers tease as the most "versatile" Assassin in the franchise's history. While no exact date has been revealed yet, Assassin's Creed Mirage is set to launch in 2023. Pre-order editions also give fans the exclusive Forty Thieves side-quest.

The Future of Assassin's Creed

Rumors about Mirage, initially titled Rift, began to surface several months back. A leaker posted details of the plot in July, claiming the title would focus on Basim's youth in Baghdad prior to joining the Hidden Ones and exploring his relationship with the Norse trickster god, Loki, who eventually possessed his body. "It's set in Baghdad and Basim is the character you play as, but he isn't aware of his nature as Loki," the leaker claimed. "Game takes place around 860AD... Basim is still rising through the ranks of the Hidden ones and isn't a master yet, but the events in the game are what end up making him the master of a borough in Constantinople."

Months later, a massive leak seemed to confirm the title had changed from Rift to Mirage. It also expanded on previously leaked details, such as Basim's youth in Baghdad and how the game would take things "back to basics." Some reveals included the game's single protagonist in Basim, who's gender cannot be changed as most modern entries allow. Mirage reportedly lacks RPG elements like dialogue choice and character leveling systems and marks the return of the Eagle Vision mechanic from the Brotherhood of Assassins. An unexpected reveal from the leak indicated that Ubisoft planned to use the blueprints for Mirage to create a remake of the original Assassin's Creed.

Ubisoft confirmed the game in a Twitter post a day after the massive leak, revealing more details to come at its Forward event. Reports also indicated that Ubisoft planned to unveil the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise with multiple title reveals, including the mysterious Infinity entry. Some of the rumored titles under the Infinity banner included Project Red with a Japan setting, and Project Hexe, supposedly the darkest entry in the franchise with its 16th-century European witch hunts setting. Early reports indicated that Infinity might become the platform for all future games in the series, acting as a Nexus for players to jump into different periods at will.
