With its release date fast-approaching, "Assassin's Creed" is turning up their promotion machine. The film, based on the blockbuster video-game franchise, spans two distinct eras: the 15th century and the near future. The latest international trailer for the big budget film focuses on the link between the two eras: a a career criminal played by Michael Fassbender.

Fassbender's Callum Lynch is rescued from execution by Abstergo Industries, the modern-day incarnation of the old Templar Order, and forced to participate in the Animus Project. Through the project, Lynch relives the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha -- an Assassin in the time of the Spanish Inquisition. As he continues to experience Aguilar’s memories, Lynch begins to acquire the knowledge and skills need to confront the Templars in the present day.

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Directed by Justin Kurzel (“Snowtown,” “Macbeth”), the film also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams. “Assassin’s Creed” opens Dec. 21.
