The live-action adaptation of Yūsei Matsui's hit manga "Assassination Classroom" opened over the weekend in Japan at No. 1, grossing $3.42 million. Variety reports the movie is expected to finish its run with about $30 million.

Debuting in 2012 in "Weekly Shonen Jump," is a comedy adventure centers on a class of misfits devoted to killing their new teacher, an alien octopus with incredible powers who has just destroyed most of the moon and is threatening to do the same to Earth. An anime series based on the manga debuted in January.

nime News Network notes that 90 percent of the movie audience for "Assassination Classroom" was female (particularly interesting considering the manga is serialized in a magazine aimed at young male readers), and 58 percent teen.

Viz Media will release the third volume of the manga next month in North America.
