Aspen Comics’ Newest Character is a Black Trans Ex-NFL Bruiser

Aspen Comics, the California-based comic book company founded by artist Michael Turner, has been diligently growing its own franchises since its inception in 2003. Now, those stories are coming together to create the Aspen Comics universe in a crossover event called “Revelations.”

The new in-fiction universe will not only bring together existing characters across multiple series but also create an entry point for new ones, like former “Uncanny X-Men” writer Scott Lobdell and artist Jordan Gunderson's as yet unnamed black ex-NFL transgender character who graces the cover of the debut issue of “No World.”

Little is known about Lobdell’s character (like her name, backstory or what team she played on) but the solicitation copy for the first issue of “No World” reveals a thing or two about the series in which she will play an integral role.

  • Written by legendary Uncanny X-Men scribe Scott Lobdell (Michael Turner’s Fathom) with art by Jordan Gunderson (Aspen Universe: Revelations), this is THE NEW Aspen title you won’t want to miss!

Lobdell tweeted some additional art and details about the character today but otherwise opted to remain vague. If nothing else, Lobdell confirmed the character will be operating on the right side of the law and that she will “kick evil’s ass.”

Another tweet from Lobdell used the same image, though with the added phrases “Thicke” and “Passing is for footballs.” Passing is a term used to describe a nonbinary person’s ability to be immediately regarded by peers as a cisgender male or cisgender female, usually resulting from a combination of physical and behavioral attributes. “Passing is for footballs,” therefore, means Lobdell’s character has no interest in being immediately perceived as cisgender female, or particularly feminine for that matter.

“No World” #1 debuts in stores April 26, 2017, shortly after the debut of Aspen Comics’ new universe in “Revelations,” which is set to release April 10, 2017.
