Cryer made his debut as the Arrowverse's Luthor in Supergirl Season 4, Episode 15 "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," returning for two additional episodes that season. He then returned in Seasons 5 and 6 in a recurring capacity while also playing a major role in the 2019 Arrowverse crossover "Crisis on Infinite Earths." Although DC fans were supportive of the possibility of Cryer reprising the role in Superman and Lois, the actor informed the Arrowverse fandom in December 2022 that he would not be returning as Luthor for the upcoming Season 3.

Lex Luthor Is Coming for Revenge in Superman and Lois

According to the official character description, Cudlitz's Lex Luthor is "known to the world as the visionary billionaire behind LexCorp, but secretly, the criminal underworld knows who Lex truly is: a brutal psychopath who terrorizes anyone he crosses paths with. When Lex debuts this season, it's been years since he dropped out of the public eye and he's re-emerging hellbent on correcting a personal injustice by enacting revenge on the two people he feels have wronged him — Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch)." Lex Luthor will serve as one of Superman's main antagonists in Season 3, with Chad L. Coleman also set to appear as Intergang crime boss Bruno Mannheim who was first teased in The CW show's Season 2 finale.

Superman and Lois Season 3 will begin several weeks after the Big Blue Boy Scout defeated Ally Allston, with Clark and Lois now working together at the Smallville Gazette together and enjoying small-town life. However, the Season 2 official synopsis teases that "Lois' own work-life balance is put to the test when an undercover assignment reveals a deadly foe that promises to change the Kent family forever. Superman would move heaven and earth for his family, but with a villain this merciless, even that might not be enough."

Superman and Lois season 3 premieres on The CW on Tuesday, March 14.
