The following contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #13, now on sale from DC Comics

The DC Universe has a long history of embracing popular characters from adaptations of their work, tweaking their comic's universe to fit closer to on-screen counterparts. While Harley Quinn is indisputably the greatest success of this phenomenon, she's not the only one.

Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 (by Nicole Maines, Tom Taylor, Clayton Henry, Marcelo Maiolo, Matt Herms, and Dave Sharpe) formally brought the Arrowverse version of Dreamer to the core-DC Universe. On top of adding another transgender hero to the ever-evolving universe, Dreamer also made a name for themselves by rescuing the Justice League from certain death in her first appearance.

Dreamer finishes showing Superman the future

Based in part on the Legion of Super-Heroes character Dreamer, Nia Nal was introduced in Supergirl's fourth season. She took on the mantle of Dreamer after revealing her abilities of precognition, and became a major hero in the Arrowverse. Now, Nia has made her debut in Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 and not a moment too soon. Arriving at the Fortress of Solitude alongside his boyfriend Jay, Jon Kent was shocked to find Nia waiting for him. She was able to astral project into the base through the dreams of the creatures within the fortress. Dreamer did this because she needed to show Jon Kent the horrifying vision she'd seen of the near-future.

It turned out that Henry Bendix's planned to take down the superhero community have only gotten darker, with a new strategy set for a week from the present day. Seemingly finding (and killing) the Joker following the events of his solo series, Bendix was able to convert a version of the massive Chemo to contain Joker Toxin. Framing the event as a wide-scale Joker attack on Gotham as a whole, Bendix unleashes a city-wide blast of Joker Toxin.

The ensuing damage killed countless civilians (as well as most of the Bat-Family). As the League arrived on the scene to assist, Bendix and Luthor's forces (known as the Rising) were revealed to be laying in wait. They ambushed the unsuspecting heroes and were able to kill both Aquamen, Hal Jordan and Wonder Woman. Only the Flash seemed to survive, while Bendix, gloating over a Kryptonite poisoned Jon Kent, murdered a captured Batman and watched as the young Superman died.

Dreamer gets tea from superman robot

The event would be framed as a massive attack by the Joker that tragically killed the League, and Bendix's forces would take their place as the world's heroes, if not for Dreamer's prediction. It's a brutal vision, with Jon forced to watch Damian Wayne choke to death on Joker Toxin, Nightwing and Orcale die holding hands, Wonder Woman silent after felling countless foes, and even himself lose against Bendix. It would have likely worked too, given that the League is splintered. Luckily, thanks to Dreamer, Jon should be able to warn his allies in the hero community and protect the rest of the world's primary heroes.

It's a reminder of how effective a proper mad genius like Bendix or Luthor can be when they have the element of surprise. By sheer numbers and willingness to slaughter innocents in the process, the duo may have found the ideal way to bring down some of the world's strongest heroes throughthe Rising. It also speaks to the sheer impact a good precog can do for a superhero group.

Similar to how characters like Destiny and Blindfold have become game changers for the X-Men over at Marvel since their resurrections, Dreamer's first act in the core-DC Universe more or less saved the lives of many of Earth's greatest heroes and her powers could continue to serve the heroes going forward. Especially if she continues to work with Superman, and potentially even becomes a member of Jon's attempts to form a new Justice League. Dreamer could become one of the DC Universes' most important heroes going forward.
