SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “Life Sentence,” the Season 6 finale of Arrow.

Arrow bid farewell to Quentin Lance in "Life Sentence," the Season 6 finale. The acting mayor took a bullet for Laurel "Black Siren" Lance, the Earth-2 doppelganger of his beloved daughter, and received a life-threatening injury. Though it didn't kill him on the spot, he died later during surgery.

Early in the episode, Quentin learned that Ricardo Diaz had kidnapped Laurel. Diaz dropped him a line on his personal cell and gave him an ultimatum: order the FBI to leave Star City or he would shoot Laurel in cold blood. Naturally, Quentin didn't trust Diaz, so he demanded to see proof of life before he did any such thing.

After a disagreement, Diaz brought Quentin back to his liar. The crimelord threw Quentin into a cell with Laurel, then pointed a gun pointblank at her face. Diaz demanded Quentin call off the FBI, threatening to kill Laurel where she stood. Laurel insisted he was bluffing, but she assumed wrong. Diaz fired off a shot to make a good on his promise, but Quentin took the bullet for her instead.

Fortunately, Team Arrow was able to track Quentin's pacemaker, leading them -- and the FBI -- straight to Diaz's hideout. Black Canary and Laurel managed to get him out of the warehouse and entrusted him to the FBI, who brought him straight to Star City's General Hospital.

Following the firefight, Oliver and the rest of Team Arrow headed right to the hospital. There, Oliver sat down to speak to Quentin and thanked him for being a father figure and role model. Dr. Elisa Schwartz, their frequent ally, interrupted to bring Quentin into surgery.

As Oliver was being arrested in the waiting room, Dr. Schwartz emerged from the operating room with bad news. She revealed that Quentin had seized during the procedure and they were unable to revive him. They called his death after his brain had been deprived of oxygen for more than seven minutes.

For any Arrow fans keeping up with the news, Quentin's death won't come as much of a surprise. Earlier this month, Quentin actor Paul Blackthorne officially left the series. His next project will be the new NBC series The InBetween, which recently received a series order.

Airing Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Arrow stars Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Rick Gonzalez, Echo Kellum, Juliana Harkavy, Kirk Acevado, Paul Blackthorne and Katie Cassidy. The Season 6 finale arrives May 17.
