Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim always planned to end the series with Oliver Queen's death. He also intended to use the series finale to introduce another major DC character -- and no, we're not talking about Green Lantern.

Speaking on the Fake Nerd Podcast, Guggenheim laid out his original ending for the series. He revealed he once wanted the finale to imply that Oliver inspired Batman to become a vigilante, but that didn't come together for several reasons, not the least of which was Batwoman's Arrowverse debut.

"I'll tell you the way I originally planned on it ending. You'll certainly see how this is different and why it's different. I always saw the show ending with Oliver's death, but Oliver's death in the actual finale," he explained. "Then I kind of had a little bit of a fantasy that Oliver would die and you'd end with some sort of news broadcast talking about his legacy and that would sort of become the voice over."

"And then you would go to this rooftop in a whole other city, and on the cut a thug or some bad guy would crash into the frame, having been punched off-screen," he continued. "And these pair of black boots would come down right in front of him and there'd be a flutter of a scalloped cape and the voice over would say something along the lines of, 'Oliver Queen inspired a whole new generation of vigilantes.' The implication being, of course, that he inspired Batman. So that, of course, didn't happen for a variety of different reasons -- not the least of which is Batwoman came along -- but that was my original conception."

In 2018, the Arrowverse introduced Batwoman in the "Elseworlds" crossover, which revealed Batman had already been missing for years at that point. This made Guggenheim's original ending was impossible; after all, Bruce Wayne couldn't be inspired to become a vigilante if he had already inspired his cousin Kate Kane to do so.

What's more, the unprecedented "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover moved up the timetable on Oliver's death. Instead of dying in the series finale, Oliver sacrificed his life to save the multiverse in the crossover event. The following two episodes examined his legacy and showed how that inspired his daughter Mia to become a hero in her own right. So the spirit of Guggenheim's original idea made it into the final episodes, even if the Dark Knight himself didn't.

Arrow Season 8 stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Rick Gonzalez as Wild Dog, Juliana Harkavy as Black Canary, Katie Cassidy as Black Siren, Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak, Joseph David-Jones as Connor Hawke and Ben Lewis as William Clayton-Queen. The Blu-ray is slated for release on April 28.
