Arrow: Katherine McNamara's Mystery Character Is Not Who You Expected

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Unmasked," the latest episode of Arrow.

Katherine McNamara is not the new Green Arrow. In "Unmasked," the latest episode of Arrow, McNamara made her Arrowverse debut as a scrappy fighter named Maya. As it turns out, Maya -- who goes by the moniker Black Star -- was working with Felicity just before she died in the flash forward timeline.

William, Zoe, Dinah and Roy found Maya fighting in a cage match. When she finished, they approached her, but she didn't seem interested in talking. However, she changed her tune when William dropped a wad of cash on the bar and asked for five minutes.

When Maya took the group to her quarters in the back, William revealed Felicity had died. Maya looked taken aback by that. "We worked together sometimes," she explained. Asked to elaborate, she said the kind of work was "none of your business." Dinah scoffed that it must be illegal, setting Maya off. "At least I'm not lying to everyone, pretending to be some kind of hero. At least I'm not a vigilante," she spat back.

Ultimately, Zoe got Maya to back off and give them more information. "I work as a broker," Maya said. "I help people find certain items. Felicity asked me to find her an electrical firing circuit and a couple transmitters." All of which, as William pointed out, could be used to make a bomb. "I don't know why she needed them. I didn't ask," she added. "As long as I get paid, you can ask for whatever you want."

As the group turned to leave, she had one more thing to say to them "Word of advice: asking questions about Felicity Smoak will not end well for anyone," she concluded.

Dinah and William quickly deduced that Maya wasn't being entirely forthcoming and went back to do some more sleuthing in her quarters, where they found something pretty damning. "These are the bomb schematics we found in Felicity's hideout. Black Star knew about her plan to blow up Star City," William said, then wondered out loud why she didn't destroy them. "Because she's still planning on using them," Dinah responded.

Black Star was originally namedropped in "Due Process" as the last person Felicity contacted before she died. Created by Paul Kupperberg and Carmine Infantino in 1983's Supergirl #1, Blackstarr was a codename for Rachel Berkowitz. As a young girl, Berkowitz was brought to a concentration camp, but she delighted the camp's commander, who brought her home to live with him. After getting her PhD, Berkowitz conducted an experiment that resulted her the ability to manipulate matter and energy. With these powers and her Nazi beliefs, she became the villain known as Blackstarr. She and Supergirl went toe-to-toe in the "Blackstarr" storyline.

Airing Mondays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW, Arrow stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak, Rick Gonzalez as Wild Dog, Echo Kellum as Mr. Terrific, Juliana Harkavy as Black Canary, Colton Haynes as Arsenal, Kirk Acevedo as Diaz, and Katie Cassidy as Black Siren.
