"Arrow" closed out its 2016 run of episodes with a real doozy of a cliffhanger: upon returning to the Arrowcave, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) noticed he wasn't alone. SPOILER alert: Inside the cave with him was none other than Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). Despite having died in the previous season, the Black Canary appeared alive and well -- or so it seemed.

The first promo for "Arrow's" 2017 premiere episode, though, revealed the potentially shocking truth behind Black Canary's return. That promo is so spoilery that we're just going to link to it instead of reveal "Arrow's" possible twist. While speaking with TV Line following the CW's presentation at the winter TCA press tour, "Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim also spoke about that specific promo without getting into the twist.

“Without commenting on the promo, which I have nothing to do with,” said Guggenheim, “[and] without commenting on the spoiler, I would say that the episode ends with laying a very specific seed, with a very specific game plan on our part that we hope to see come to fruition.”

We do know that Katie Cassidy's character is back, in some form or fashion, for at least the next episode. So with that in mind, TV Line asked "Arrow" co-showrunner Wendy Mericle if it's possible we'll see more Black Canary action before season five ends."There's definitely a possibility," she said. “Look, it’s hard to do a show about Green Arrow without having a Black Canary. I don’t know if it will happen this season or when, but… we are going to be true to origins in the DC universe, and she’s always going to be there.” So far on the show, three characters have carried the Canary name: Sara Lance, Laurel Lance and Evelyn Sharp.

"Arrow" returns from its winter hiatus on Wednesday, January 25 with an episode titled "Who Are You?" You can check out the synopsis for the episode below.

OLIVER WANTS JUSTICE; FELICITY WANTS REVENGE — Worried that Prometheus is right and he is truly a killer at heart, Oliver (Stephen Amell) looks for any ray of hope and finds it in what seems to be the miraculous return of Laurel Lance (guest star Katie Cassidy).

However, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), still reeling from Detective Malone’s murder, is bent on revenge – she wants to stop Prometheus at any cost. While in prison, Diggle (David Ramsey) fights for his life.

Gregory Smith directed the episode written by Ben Sokolowski & Brian Ford Sullivan.

Starring Stephen Amell as the Emerald Archer, "Arrow" airs Wednesdays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW. The series also stars Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey, John Barrowman, Willa Holland and more.
