This past Tuesday, Arrow aired its final season premiere, which saw Oliver Queen travel to Earth-2. The episode contained an Easter egg many fans likely didn't expect to see, and -- according to current showrunner Beth Schwartz -- Batwoman deserves the credit.
"Starling City" began with a familiar scene, as Oliver was rescued from Lian Yu once again. However, when Oliver's rescuers arrived on the island, viewers saw Batman's cowl on the pike that held Deathstroke's mask. While speaking to TVLine, Schwartz explained how the series was able to incorporate the iconic item into the episode.
“Thank god for Batwoman,” Schwartz stated. “Now that [Batman and Batwoman are] in our universe, we’re able to get away with a lot more things Batman-related.” References to Batman and his mythos in the Arrowverse were previously limited by Warner Bros. and DC Comics, though as of last year’s “Elseworlds” crossover event, this has changed. However, the Dark Knight himself still won’t be appearing in the Arrowverse anytime soon.
Schwartz's co-writer for the episode, Marc Guggenheim, also praised special effects business Zoic Studios for “working [the cowl] in so seamlessly to [their] original pilot footage.”
Airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Arrow's final season stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Rick Gonzalez as Wild Dog, Juliana Harkavy as Black Canary, Katie Cassidy as Black Siren, Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak, Joseph David-Jones as Connor Hawke and Ben Lewis as William Clayton-Queen.
