Aronofsky to Take on “Wolverine 2”

Deadline reports director Darren Aronofsky has “begun talks” to helm the second “Wolverine” solo film. “Aronofsky and Hugh Jackman have a close relationship after they made ‘The Fountain’, and Aronofsky recently met with Fox chief Tom Rothman to be sure he would get the kind of creative controls to which he is accustomed,” writes Deadline’s Mike Fleming. “I’m an [sic] not sure if Aronofsky is going to do ‘Wolverine 2’, but it is his job if he wants it and they are talking.”

This follows Monday’s announcement of Zack Snyder as director of the Christopher Nolan produced “Superman” reboot. Aronofsky’s name had been on the short list for that project, including “Let Me In” director Matt Reeves and even Robert Zemeckis, who has not made a live action film in ten years.

Star Hugh Jackman has been talking “Wolverine 2” since the first solo outing was released. Though press lines and interviews, we know the film will pick up from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” with Logan — now an amnesiac — in Japan. The story will be an adaptation of the Chris Claremont/Frank Miller four issue miniseries. One of the first film’s alternate endings does indeed feature the character drinking in a bar somewhere in Japan. Jackman previously told MTV News, “I love the idea of this kind of anarchic character, the outsider, being in this world – I can see it aesthetically, too – full of honor and tradition and customs and someone who’s really anti-all of that, and trying to negotiate his way.”

Aronofsky’s is no stranger to developing comic book films. The filmmaker worked on a version of “Batman: Year One” prior to Christopher Nolan taking the reigns for “Batman Beings” and was attached to “Watchmen” when the property was at Paramount in 2004. Perhaps the third time will be the charm for the Aronofsky, who is known for smaller, artier films. The director was also slated to remake “Robocop” earlier in the decade, though that project ultimately disintegrated.
