Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead drops its first look at the zombie-fighting mercenaries.

Wrestler turned action star Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) shared Army of the Dead's first movie poster on Twitter, with the caption, "ALWAYS BET ON DEAD. #ArmyOfTheDead. In select theaters May and on Netflix May 21." Snyder's upcoming film is set in a zombie-filled Las Vegas, following a group of post-plague survivors -- led by Bautista's Scott Ward -- breaking into an abandoned casino to steal their biggest score yet.

In 2019, Snyder took over directing the zombie-heist film from previously attached director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Previous interviews with Snyder revealed that he scrubbed one of the most disturbing elements from the original film's script -- male zombies raping living women to create zombie offspring -- and reworked the entire film.

Since then, he's promised that Army of the Dead is "pure zombie mayhem." Army of the Dead's debut trailer gave fans a sneak peek at both how the rampaging zombies across Las Vegas will look and the ridiculous fire-power of the mercenaries in action. While Snyder promised fans a "balls-to-the-wall zombie heist movie," he added that there will also be a lot of heart to his characters, noting, "It's going to surprise people that there's a lot of warmth and real emotion with these great characters."

Snyder co-wrote the upcoming, original film with Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum). Although the zombie film has yet to debut on Netflix, the streaming platform has already ordered both a prequel film and an anime series spinoff -- building its own Army of the Dead franchise.

In reaction to the budding franchise news, Snyder stated, "I'm incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation."
