It's amazing to think of how many stories from the zombie genre have been made ever since George Romero kickstarted the craze. It's gotten to the point where it's hard not to compare them from time to time.

Zack Snyder recently returned to his undead roots with Army of the Dead, a heist movie where a team of specialists infiltrates a zombie-ridden Las Vegas. Incidentally, the video game Dead Rising 2 has an eerie amount of similarities. There are enough differences to distinguish the two but it's hard to deny how much they have in common.

10 Similar: Both Leads Are Widowers Protecting Their Daughters

In Army of the Dead, Scott Ward killed his zombified wife in the initial outbreak and distances himself from his daughter, Kate, whom he protects when she sneaks into Vegas with him to rescue her missing friend.

Chuck Greene from Dead Rising 2 was also forced to kill his zombified wife and raise his infected daughter, Katey. Spending half of the game looking for the Zombrex medication she needs to keep her from turning. What are the odds of both leads with daughters named Kate and killed their wives?

9 Different: The Leads' Relationship with Their Respective Daughters

Scott Ward and Chuck Greene care deeply about their respective daughters but their relationships differ greatly. After Scott killed his zombified wife in front of his Kate, he distanced himself from her, fearing that she resented him.

In actuality, Kate only grew to resent him because he was never there to emotionally support her. Katey on the other hand loves her dad and he constantly checks in on her. Probably because she needs medicine that keeps her from turning into a zombie.

8 Similar: Both Films Feature A Heist Amid A Zombie Outbreak

Heists are naturally risky endeavors but apparently, the crews in both properties were willing to go through with them. In Army of the Dead, Scott Ward is hired to break into his employer's vault hidden within the zombie-occupied city of Las Vegas. A similar scheme is hatched by Tyrone "TK" King in Dead Rising 2.

He caused a zombie outbreak so his team of mercenaries could rob every casino vault while the zombies killed and distracted everyone else. Both of them rely on the government nuking the cities to cover their tracks in a daring, but admittedly clever fashion.

7 Different: TK & His Mercenaries Are the Villains

While their plans are similar, Scott Ward and his crew have more noble intentions than TK and his goons. Scott and his crew were never responsible for the outbreak but some of them did help survivors escape. When they perform the heist, Las Vegas is abandoned and aside from one obnoxious guard, they only kill zombies.

Whereas TK deliberately freed the zombies in Fortune City and framed Chuck so that his team could rob all the casinos in the chaos, infecting and killing thousands of innocents in an active city while killing anyone living that stands in their way.

6 Similar: Both Stories Are Basically Set In Vegas

If it wasn't already obvious, the locations of Army of the Dead and Dead Rising 2 are practically identical. Army of the Dead takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, a city infamous for its casinos and entertainment.

While Dead Rising 2 takes place in a resort called Fortune City, it's clearly a pastiche of the real Las Vegas. It's got all the bells and whistles from casinos, nightclubs, stage shows, and themed restaurants. The only reason they didn't use Vegas was that it already suffered an outbreak and got bombed.

5 Different: Dead Rising 2 Better Utilizes the Location

One of the most enticing attributes of both stories is that there is a zombie outbreak in a Las Vegas-based environment. Such a concept is loaded with potential for a story that can't be told in a regular zombie story. Army of the Dead touches upon this in the film's opening montage, which shows zombie Elvis impersonators, but after that, they only have one shoot out in a casino.

Dead Rising 2 takes full advantage of its surroundings and has Chuck exploring malls, multiple casinos, clubs, restaurants while fighting stage magicians and lounge singers. Quite frankly, Army of the Dead could have taken place in any other city that had a casino and nothing would change.

4 Similar: Betrayals From Within The Group

The Walking Dead and the Rick and Morty episode "One Crew Over the Crewcoo's Morty" have proven two things: zombies aren't the only threats to worry about and that betrayals in heist movies are almost inevitable. In Army of the Dead, Martin revealed that his purpose on the mission was to steal the head of an alpha zombie for his boss and sell it to the highest bidder.

In Dead Rising 2, it's revealed that Raymond Sullivan helped cause the outbreak as an agent of Phenotrans to raise the demand for Zombrex. A similar betrayal occurs in Dead Rising 2: Off the Record but with a different character.

3 Different: Vastly Different Varieties of Opponents

Both stories feature zombies as the main threat but they aren't the only opposition the protagonists face. In Army of the DeadScott and his team are up against regular zombies, alpha zombies, zombie tigers, zombie horses, and zombie androids.

As for Dead Rising 2, the zombies were the least of his problems. It's the psychopaths that were the real challenge; from mascots to tiger handlers to cannibalistic chefs. At least the zombies could be mowed down with bullets.

2 Similar: Both Plots Are On A Timer

As if pulling off a heist in a zombie-infested city wasn't bad enough, both stories force the protagonists to work under a time limit. Scott Ward was given three days to assemble a team, infiltrate Las Vegas, and get the money out before the military nuked the city.

Incidentally, the military also planned to firebomb Fortune City in three days, as well as rescue any of the survivors. Chuck Greene had to prove his innocence before then, otherwise he would be charged with causing the outbreak. No pressure, right?

1 Different: Army of the Dead Has More Menacing Zombies

If there's one thing that fans love about the Dead Rising series it's the opportunity to butcher zombies with whatever they can get their hands on. Chuck can make any ordinary item into a weapon, from umbrellas to wheelchairs to teddy bears, and can use them against the mindless, shambling undead.

The zombies of Army of the Dead aren't defeated that easily and have changed since the initial outbreak. The Alpha zombies are even worse since they wear armor, accept sacrifices, and utilize zombie animals. Suffice to say, these are smarter than the average zombie.
