The Valet Leans Into High-Profile Romantic Comedy

the valet

The idea of an average, unassuming person managing to find true love with someone seemingly out of reach is a tried and true romantic comedy premise. This idea of amorous cinematic wish-fulfillment gets a new twist in the Hulu original movie The Valet, based on the 2006 French film of the same name written and directed by Francis Veber. The American adaptation is produced by Eugenio Derbez, who also stars in the film as Antonio, the titular valet who stumbles into an unlikely romance.

After a popular actor named Olivia Allan, portrayed by Samara Weaving, is nearly caught having an affair with a married man, she decides to avert attention away from the potential scandal. Desperate for a solution, Olivia decides to present Antonio as her boyfriend to the press as she navigates the public eye in Los Angeles. Now the darling of all of Hollywood’s biggest tabloids, Antonio must now deal with being shadowed by the press as he contemplates whether his feelings for Olivia are genuine.

Lovestruck High Provides an Absolutely Bonkers Dating Show

lovestruck high

There is something to be said for trashy reality television, and Prime Video may have launched what is perhaps the most morally questionable reality show in recent memory with Lovestruck High. The show has a group of British -- and one Irish person -- people in their 20s travel to an American high school, posing as teenagers while vying for a prom date. The eyebrow-raising premise certainly serves as entertainment in the same capacity as watching a disaster play out in real-time, with those successful in landing a prom date winning a hefty cash prize.

Fortunately, Lovestruck High appears to be in on its own joke, right down to the narration provided by Lindsay Lohan. While the sexualized overtones do warrant some discomfort, the material is delivered in such an unabashedly and theatrically over-the-top manner that it’s virtually impossible to take the proceedings seriously. Lovestruck High is as bananas and depraved as reality television gets, even with its underlying self-awareness, and it truly is a feat that needs to be seen to be believed.

Army of Darkness Brings Evil Dead to the Dark Ages

Bruce Campbell as Ash in Army of Darkness

With the Evil Dead video game now available, fans can take on the role of the iconic horror movie hero Ash Williams as he battles Deadites in foreboding forests. For those looking to revisit one of the franchise’s most beloved entries, Army of Darkness is available to stream on Hulu. The 1992 film leans into hard fantasy as Ash finds himself teleported by the Necronomicon to the Arthurian Age, helping the Knights of the Round Table contend with the Deadites in their time.

Whereas the first two Evil Dead movies brought the gory scares, Army of Darkness doubled down on the comedic undertone introduced in Evil Dead II by providing a more epic scope. Bruce Campbell and filmmaker Sam Raimi are at the height of their powers, working together on the horror franchise they created. For those who enjoyed seeing Campbell and Raimi work together again on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, now is the perfect time to go back for a rewatch of Army of Darkness.

Bubba Ho-Tep Showcases Bruce Campbell in a New Light

Bubba Ho-Tep Mummy

And for those that still haven’t gotten enough of Bruce Campbell from his role in the Evil Dead franchise, one of the actor’s most memorably unique roles is available to stream on Prime Video. In the 2002 horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep, Campbell portrays an aging man claiming to be Elvis Presley, teaming up with another nursing home resident claiming to be John F. Kennedy. These delusions are countered by the appearance of an ancient mummy feeding on the souls of their fellow residents and staff.

Based on the novel of the same name by Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-Tep stands as a quintessential cult classic movie. Campbell gives an inspired performance as Elvis and leans into what he does best, blending monster-hunting horror and genuine laughs. One of Campbell’s more overlooked movies, Bubba Ho-Tep proves the actor doesn’t have to rely on the role of Ash Williams to deliver solid horror-comedy.
