WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Army of the Dead, now in theaters and streaming on Netflix.

Army of the Dead by Zack Snyder, while big on action, is actually rather contained, as the film is confined to the former Las Vegas Strip. However, the film's ending suggests the possibility of a sequel that could be on a much larger scale due to one character's seeming survival. There are also other survivors who could factor into this possible sequel, further broadening the world of Army of the Dead.

Vanderohe's Survival

Omari Hardwick plays Vanderohe, a former soldier who's integral to the team. As an experienced fighter,  he initially questions the team's brain, Ludwig Dieter, who's new to the world of zombies. Despite this, the two form a bond, saving each other's lives at various points.

Their friendship comes to an end when Dieter locks Vanderohe in the vault containing the money the team had been supposedly sent to retrieve in the first place, thus saving him from Zeus, the alpha zombie in Las Vegas. Not long afterward, a warhead hits the area, decimating the remains of the Strip and taking out the remaining zombies. This impact also destroys the vault, with Vanderohe crawling out of the ensuing rubble. He makes his way to Utah before boarding a flight to Mexico City, discovering a formerly unseen bite mark from one of the zombies.

This presents the possibility for a sequel where Vanderohe either fights his infection or has already succumbed to it. The latter would involve him attacking and infecting others, spreading the zombie mutation far beyond its original Las Vegas containment area and inciting a massive pandemic. This could turn the United States and even the world at large into a veritable Planet of the Dead.

Army of the Dead's Other Survivors

Another character who survives is Kate Ward, the daughter of Dave Bautista's Scott Ward. She gets away and is given a huge heap of cash by her dying father before she is forced to kill him. Her survival at the end of the film means she could be a factor in a sequel. What exactly this role could be is unknown, and it may simply involve her watching a newscast about the spreading infection from inside a new restaurant built in her father's honor.

Coyote could also show up in some fashion in this sequel. She seemingly died after being impaled by a zombie toward the movie's end, but she may have somehow survived or even been turned into a zombie. This is somewhat unlikely given the nuclear decimation of Las Vegas, but she has more of a chance of having a major role in the sequel than Kate does given what a complicated character she is, having smuggled people into Vegas before and understanding how zombie society works better than any other character. Whether she returns or not depends on the film's performance, as well as the reception of its prequel and spin-off.

Directed and co-written by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Raul Castillo, Tig Notaro, Theo Rossi and Ana de la Reguera. The film is now in theaters and is streaming on Netflix.
