Actor Armie Hammer has experienced another blow to his career, as his agency has cut ties with him over a recent scandal.
The agency, WME, dropped Hammer just weeks after the controversy about his inappropriate communications with women surfaced, as reported by THR. He has since left the film projects that he had been signed for.
In January, Hammer was accused of sending a series of explicit messages to a woman who claimed she had been involved with him in a secret affair during his marriage. The messages contained graphic descriptions of sex, abuse and cannibalism, with some saying, "I am 100% a cannibal. I want to eat you... That's scary to admit. I've never admitted that before."
Screenshots of the messages were posted to an Instagram account. Although their authenticity has not been verified, several other women have spoken up since the incident to say that they had also had exchanges with Hammer of the same kind, with his ex-girlfriend saying that the reports didn't surprise her due to suggestive remarks he had habitually made during their relationsihp.
Hammer denied all allegations and issued a statement saying, "I’m not responding to these bullshit claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic." The film in question, Shotgun Wedding, has continued production with Josh Duhamel in Hammer's role.
"Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that," Hammer said regarding his departure of the Jennifer Lopez-starring action romantic comedy. The production offered an official response which said, "Given the imminent start date of Shotgun Wedding, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision."
Hammer also left another project, The Offer, last week. The 10-episode Paramount+ series about the making of The Godfather had cast Hammer as the lead, Al Ruddy, who produced the classic film in 1972.
Armie Hammer is known for his roles in Call Me By Your Name, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., 2013's The Lone Ranger and a variety of television guest stars and voice roles. He also stars in the upcoming films Crisis and Death on the Nile.
