Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which originally aired on Nickelodeon for seven seasons from 1991 to 1996, has been revived for modern audiences as a series of stand-alone horror miniseries centering around different chapters of the Midnight Society -- a loose collection of of horror story-loving teenagers. The group from the show's latest iteration, Curse of the Shadows, find itself trapped in one such haunted tale, with the four friends -- and one of their younger brothers -- investigating the disappearance of their leader, Conner. In the process, they find themselves drawn into the mystery of the Shadowman, and the curse that's festered in their sleepy town.

During an exclusive interview with CBR, three of Are You Afraid of the Dark: Curse of the Shadows -- Bryce Gheisar, Arjun Athalye and Parker Queenan -- spoke about discovering the legacy of the series and what it's like to become members of the Midnight Society.

Looking back at the nearly thirty-year-old Are You Afraid of the Dark? franchise, the trio admitted to not having a wealth of experience before joining. "I didn't know too much about it," Athalye admitted. "But when I booked the role, I definitely looked up what the series was about, and I was surprised at how iconic it was and for how many people. It was such a big part of their childhoods. I really hope that after this series comes out, down the line that future generations of kids will look back on this series and be like, 'Wow, I remember when that show scarred me as a kid!"

For Gheiser, the appeal to joining the series came from a personal source -- Miya Cech, friend and c0-star on Nickelodeon's The Astronauts. "[Miya] was in the last season and... told me how great it was. And she really hyped it up and made me really excited."

"I didn't know anything about it," Queenan recalled. "I've heard of the name of the show before, but I have a lot of friends that used to watch it at the time, and they told me a lot about it. And after having learned a little bit more about the nineties series, it's clear to see how a lot of the elements from that have a lot of spinoffs today and have a big effect on some of the television and movies you see in 2020. But yeah, it was exciting to be able to revitalize that and find fun ways to make it new and modern and still appease young audiences and those nostalgic fans."

Since the miniseries focuses on the Midnight Society themselves instead of just the stories they tell each other, Athalye, Queenan and Gheiser all got the chance to delve into the characters more than they may have in other iterations of the series. Queenan said "I think for myself, a piece of what I could easily draw off of is any of the stereotypes in older horror films of the guy that thinks he's capable of fighting this formidable force totally solo. But I don't want to give too much away because there are more inspirations."

Gheiser brought up about "it's really cool because in this show, we bring a lot of that into it, where our characters are super obsessed with these comic book horror stories. So that's why we're a part of the Midnight Society, and that's why we tell stories because we're so into it. And there's a lot of scenes where we're definitely geeking out about new upcoming projects that people have been doing. There are definitely some Easter eggs that I think the old TV show fans will enjoy."

Reflecting on how their characters and their growth change over the course of the season, Athalye explained that "[Curse of the Shadows writer] JT Billings did a great job. My character kind of has this nerd geek archetype, but there's so much more to him as the series progresses. And you'll see that he's a nerd, but he's super confident in himself and he doesn't really care what people think about him. So I think all these characters are similar to other things you will have seen, but they're way more nuanced in ways that I think the audience won't expect."

Looking back on getting to join the legacy of the Midnight Society, Queenan described the experience as being "really crazy to be a part of it. Even just hearing everybody say that to us while we were filming the show, it was definitely a little nerve-wracking -- to take so many people's memories of this show and try to change it up and make it something new, while still keeping that old nostalgic feeling was very scary. But it was very exciting for us to take that challenge on."

"To be completely honest," Parker added, "I feel like a piece of me was a little bit scared... A lot of people rely on this, and even my friends that have watched Are You Afraid of the Dark?. I was hoping that we'd make something good out of it. And to be completely honest, I think we made something that's really original and really new, but I think it'll resonate with a lot of those old audiences anyway... I think they're going to really like it."

Are You Afraid of the Dark? Curse of the Shadows stars Bryce Gheisar, Arjun Athalye, Beatrice Kitsos, Malia Baker, Dominic Mariche and Parker Queenan. New episodes air Fridays on Nickelodeon.
