Are Muppets Broadway-Bound?

The Muppets may be gearing up to tackle one of the few remaining arenas they haven’t already conquered: the stage. Variety reports that Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzy and the gang were tested out in a recent 15-minute showcase at the New Amsterdam Theater, which is owned by Disney.

The day was filled with presentations for shows at various levels of completion, but the Muppets segment was a test run/proof of concept. The idea was to get 85 puppets and performers on stage with some test sets and see how it played to a theater audience. The actual material was a kind of greatest hits that included Kermit’s “Rainbow Connection.” Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, The Pee-Wee Herman Show) directed the presentation.

At this point Disney Theatrical Prods. is analyzing the performance for stage viability, so consider this one at the very, very early phases of development. The New Amsterdam will next play home to Disney’s production of Aladdin, which opens next year. Meanwhile, the Muppets will next be seen on the big screen in The Muppets … Again! on March 21, 2014.
