Miles "Tails" Prower is Sonic the Hedgehog's best friend and one of the most enduring characters in the Sonic Universe. This two-tailed fox often appears as a sidekick to Sonic, first joining his side in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He can not only fly thanks to his propeller-like twin-tails but is also extremely intelligent, inventing numerous gadgets to assist Sonic and pals. He's also starred in his own games, including Tails and the Music Maker, Tails Adventure, and Tails' Skypatrol.

Tails is in many of Sonic's television shows and will likely be appearing in the next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, the sequel to the top-grossing superhero movie of 2020. Besides his video game and television appearance, Tails was a recurring character in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic books published by Archie Comics. This video game-inspired comic book revealed plenty of things about the kitsune, which we'll be covering in detail below. He has a surprisingly sad and dark history.

10 He Has The Worst Nickname And Birthday Ever

Tails-On-Sonic-#179

In the Archie Comics, Sonic X, and other adaptations, the origin of Miles Prower's nickname, Tails, is not an innocent one. He received the nickname Tails from other characters who would bully him for his second tail. Sonic ended up ridding Tails of his worries and inspiring him to be a hero. But the unfortunate side of Tails history does not end there. To pile onto him even more, Tails was born the same day Dr. Robotnik took over Mobotropolis.

9 Tails Doll

Tails-Doll-Sonic-#267

One of the recurring enemies for Sonic and pals is a doll created by Doctor Robotnik that looks exactly like Tails. This "Tails Doll" is based on a character in the Sonic R video game. It has many dangerous abilities, including the capacity to take raw materials and turn them into a protective outer shell to keep it safe from harm.

The doll can also shoot lasers and be extremely stealthy, making it capable of creeping in for a vicious attack. These powers and the doll's appearance have fueled many fans' imaginations, who have taken the character and created violent stories about it. These scary stories have been swapped on the Internet as part of a Creepypasta series.

8 Rolling Combo Ability

Based on the move in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, the Rolling Combo is a technique only achieved when Tails and Sonic work together. The move features the two hand-in-hand both using their spin attack, making it more effective and farther reaching than their standard attacks alone. This duo-attack is also featured in the IDW comics.

7 Tails Got His Own Mini-Series

Tails got a three-issue mini-series titled Sonic the Hedgehog's Buddy: Tails (or simple Tails), which released in 1995. The mini-series was written by Michael Gallagher and featured cover art by Patrick Spaziante & Harvey Mercadoocasio, cover colors by Heroic Age, interior pencils by Dave Manak & Michael Gallagher, interior inks by Harvey Mercadoocasio, interior colors by Barry Grossman, and letters by Mindy Eisman.

The series introduced some new characters into the Sonic Universe, including the crocodile-robot Crocbot, Knuckle's great grandfather Athair, and the allied groups of the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters and the Downunda Freedom Fighters. The mini-series takes place after Tails' adventures in the Sonic Archives Vol. 7 story "Growing Pains" and the events of Sonic Archives Vol. 8.

6 He Created His Own Dog

Tails-And-T-Pup

Tails is a brilliant inventor and engineer, and one of his cutest creations is T-Pup. Based on the Remote Robot from the video game Tails Adventure, this robotic dog in the Archie Comics helped Tails and his friends during battles. He was capable of flying, creating holograms, as well as going on underwater missions. T-Pup's eyes can also be used as a flashlight. Man's best friend is apparently also fox's best friend.

5 His Biological Parents Are Amadeus And Rose Prower

Tails-And-Amadeus-Prower

Tails' father is Amadeus Prower, who led the Special Forces Team during the Great War in the series. His war efforts lead to many battles, one of which resulted in him getting shot in the eye by Colin Kintobor, resulting in him wearing an eyepatch. Unfortunately, Amadeus was roboticized the same day his son Tails was born.

Tails' mother is Rosemary Prower, who is part of the Council of Acorn. She would be captured by Robotnik's forces but managed to escape with her roboticized husband. Eventually, Amadeus was returned to normal and the two were reunited with Tails.

4 He Was Raised By Woodchucks

Due to their abduction, Tails could not be raised by his biological parents, Amadeus Prower and Rosemary Prower. So, he was left to Rosie Woodchuck and her cousin Julayla Chipmunk, who took care of the children that became orphans during Dr. Robotnik's tyrannical reign. Julayla eventually passed away from old age.

3 He's The Chosen One

Tails-As-The-Chosen-One-With-Shadow

Within the Sonic Universe, there is a prophecy about a "Chosen One." This prophecy was delivered by the Ancient Walkers, three beings believed to have been Mobian dinosaurs. According to these three, the "Chosen One," an Avatar (who turned out to be Knuckles), and another champion would bring down the big bad Mammoth Moguel, who is planning to destroy the multiverse.

They would achieve this prophecy by bringing together all of the Chaos Emerald and bring the world into a period called "The Great Harmony." Tails even transforms during this event to become Turbo Tails, in a similar fashion to Super Sonic and Super Shadow. Though unlike their Dragon Ball Z styled looks, Tails just gets a cape and glowy hands.

2 His Uncle Merlin Prower

Sonic-Merlin-Prower

Tails' uncle, Merlin Prower, served as the Kingdom of Acorn's wizard. He was Amadeus' Prower's biological brother and Rosemary Prower's brother-in-law. He studied the mystical Chaos Force under the tutelage of the Ancient Walkers and is one of the most powerful magic users in all of Mobius. He would go into exile during the war and continue to study and grow his magical abilities. Merlin would be named one of the three successors of the Ancient Walkers, known as the Neo Walkers.

1 Unfortunate Alternate Versions

There were alternate dimensions in the Sonic Universe, which means many characters had versions from themselves from other worlds, some of which met rather unfortunate ends or were pure evil. Tails was one such character who had a few incarnations. The "Dark Mobius" version of Tails was defeated by a power-mad Knuckles (referred to as Dark Enerjak) in this universe, getting his Core (the Sonic Universe equivalent of a soul) punched out of his body and turning him into a slave known as a Prelate. There is also a villainous "Anti-Moebius" version of Tails dubbed the "Anti-Tails" or "Evil-Tails." Yet another version of him is a giant, evil monster called Tails-Zilla, who transformed due to Chaos Emerald radiation.
