Archie, Betty and Veronica- the original love triangle.
While the CW's upcoming Archie re-imagining "Riverdale" changes a lot in tone of the classic comics, a new clip from shows that certain things never change. Namely, the romantic indecision of protagonist Archie Andrews (K.J. Apa), good girl Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and outspoken rich kid Veronica Lodge (Camilia Mendes).
The scene from the premiere finds Betty about to confess her feelings for long time friend Archie at perhaps the most inopportune moment - just as Veronica arrives in Riverdale, specifically the very diner they're sitting in. Betty's sincere speech becomes white noise as Archie stares, mouth more or less agape, at Veronica's slow- motion entrance. Veronica doesn't hesitate to express her displeasure with the town as "Riverdale" doesn't hesitate to express its pop- culture savvy. "Are you familiar with the works of Truman Capote? I'm 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' but this place is strictly 'In Cold Blood.'"
In this iteration, Veronica moves to Riverdale with her mother after her father is caught on some ambiguous white collar crime. Despite the tension seemingly being set up in the clip, both Mendes and Reinhart have promised that their Betty and Veronica will be more friends than frenemies.
“I think, throughout the entire season, they’re always going to be working their friendship, and whatever rivalry happens is going to happen because of Archie, but it’s never going to get in the way of the essence of their friendship," Mendes previously said.
Also starring Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Ross Butler as Reggie Mantle and more, “Riverdale” premieres TONIGHT at 9 pm on The CW.
