During an exclusive interview with CBR, Archer star Amber Nash spoke about the evolution of Pam Poovey across the course of the show, and what it's like being a part of such an ever-evolving series.

At the start of Archer, Pam was something of a quiet side character. However, she soon became on of the show's most bombastic figures. Nash recalled how the show "called her 'mousy' in the first episode, which is just incredible to think about now. For me, I was just happy to not make any waves and to do anything they wanted me to do. She ended up being the butt of the joke for a lot of stuff. But then, [series creator Adam Reed], who almost wrote all the episodes for the first ten seasons, needed another character who could do stuff, so he started giving it to Pam.

"Pam started developing all these crazy skills and became a kind of a badass [...] Reed started to realize what we were capable of. It was so wonderful. Pam's my favorite, I love how badass she is and that she's a sex symbol. Even if I didn't work on the show, I would love Archer, and Pam would be my favorite character."

One of the defining aspects of the character, especially late in Archer, has been her confidence. Pam has become an active, energetic and confident woman with a surprisingly fluid and straightforward sexuality that few female characters get to have. Pam rolls with the punches in a way not even the purposefully detached Sterling Archer can manage.

"I think her confidence comes from her being completely unapologetic of who she is," Nash explained. "She really doesn't care what anyone thinks about her. You rarely see that kind of female character portrayed. So it really is magical. It makes her relatable because she's a completely normal person but she's someone people can inspire to be. I often wish I had the kind of confidence that Pam has, because if you have that kind of confidence, you can do literally anything! And when she fails -- which she totally does, like everyone else -- she's just like 'well, alright, onto the next thing!' It doesn't take long for Pam to pick herself back up."

Archer has morphed multiple times over the years, taking the same group of strange and bizarre spies into different tones and settings -- even relocating through time and space thanks to the "coma years." The eighth, ninth, and tenth seasons of the show -- "Dreamland," "Danger Island" and "Archer: 1999" -- each brought the show into entirely different genres. While the fanbase for the series has been split about those years, it's an experience Nash relished as a performer.

"I think we've taken some really big risks, and FX has been such an incredible network, because they're just like 'yeah, do it, whatever, that's great.' That's why they're such a successful network. But the three seasons when Archer was in a coma, and 'Archer: Vice,' all of those were huge risks! There were a lot of fans who hated 'Dreamland," hated those years. And we've had a huge jump in ratings this year because a lot of people came back because they weren't watching.

"But it's also why the show is successful because you can't do comedy and do the same thing forever. You have to take risks, and when you take risks you're not going to make everyone happy. But the people who are with you are so with you. The people who really love Archer loved those years. I think taking risks and making decisions that weren't always popular decisions but were really gratifying for the artists and the writers and the actors has been part of what made us so successful. And getting to do that with network approval doesn't always happen. So it's been a wonderful place we've gotten to be in with all these things."

Starring the voices of H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates and Jessica Walter, the 11th season of Archer airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FXX.
