Aquaman director James Wan has officially sunk a rumor that his upcoming film would feature three villains. Wan called the idea of pitting a superhero against three villains in an origin movie “ridiculous.” He finally set the record straight on who will be the film’s antagonist opposite Jason Momoa’s Aquaman.

“This is what I’ll say: I don’t have three villains,” Wan said. “I think that’s ridiculous! I would never go into an origin movie with three villains. We don’t even know the main character let alone the world and its antagonist. I believe in taking baby steps.”

The current theory about Aquaman’s villains, which has been gaining traction, is that the film will feature a trifecta of villains: Patrick Wilson’s Ocean Master, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta and Dolph Lundgren’s Nereus. Wan has shot down that theory, reaffirming what many already suspected. The film will have a singular villain after all.

Wan’s interview with Entertainment Weekly delved deeper into his plans for the origin film, as well as the irrefutable identity of the movie’s big bad. It’s a seemingly necessary step, as many DC Extended Universe fans felt Aquaman got the short end of the stick in Justice League, where many of the Atlantean’s scenes were cut due to imposed time restraints. Thankfully, it sounds like Wan, who is best known for his work with the Fast & Furious franchise, has things under control.

“I want to introduce Arthur Curry in a much more emotional and powerful way, and introduce Mera played by Amber Heard, and of course there’s Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison playing his parents,” Wan said. “We know Black Manta is in there, but I will say this: Patrick Wilson is the main antagonist in this film. I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘villain,’ but he’s the antagonist.”

Wilson was cast as Ocean Master back in December of 2016. Ocean Master is Aquaman’s half-brother who is constantly vying for control of Atlantis. It was confirmed in Justice League that Aquaman had turned his back on Atlantis, leaving the state of its monarchy an uncertain thing.

Debuting in theaters on Dec. 21, 2018, Aquaman is directed by James Wan and stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry and Dolph Lundgren as Nereus.
